Argent Theme Portfolio Titles

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am using the Argent theme and my first time using support. Recently I noticed that one of the words in a title on a porfolio is continuing on another line. To the best of my knowledge this is new. It does not look professional at all. How do I correct this issue? Although I built my website a few years back I am not very website savy.
    My website is http://www.AlbanyGraveDigger.com
The problem can be seen on the portfolio called Gravestone Services. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Hi there,

You are referring to the text on your homepage? The section here?

You can see from my screenshot, the text is too large to run as a single line (it would break out of the box if you were to try) so I don’t see how it’s possible that the words were on one line previously.

It is possible to modify the spacing in that area to use a smaller font size, which is the only option I can think of that would allow that text to fit comfortably. There is not a theme setting to tweak the text in this way, but you can upgrade your site to our WordPress.com Premium Plan and from there we can help with a bit of CSS to modify the text size so both words fit on one line.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi Thanks for the response! Both words were not on the same line. It used to look like this:

    Gravestone
    Services

Just like your screen shot. Is the screen shot how you view it? Because on my laptop the word Gravestone is broken. It now looks like

    Graveston
    e Services

I’m not sure how this happened. I just noticed this today. I’ve had the website for three years and I’m not sure how this happened. If the public sees this the correct way then everything is fine. Just strange that I’m viewing it differently on a laptop.

  • Hi there,

Depending on how the theme is coded, it can be the case that long words like that (which are close to hitting the padding of the box they are contained in) my “break” in strange ways like this… it can depend on the computer you are using and how it handles text rendering. For example my screenshot is on a Mac, but it may look a bit different on a Windows PC, and it may even look just a little different on XP vs. Windows 10 at Microsoft has also changed how the render text over time.

Did you happen to be viewing your site on a different computer than normal?

One thing to consider: The only “safe” way to display a title this long on your site is to change the font size to something smaller. This can be done using the custom font tools on your theme, as shown in the video at this link: https://d.pr/v/l7lxUt

You can complete the steps shown in my video here: https://wordpress.com/customize/

Please note that it’s not possible to change the size of the default font, so you will first need to pick a custom font that is similar in style (as shown in my video) and then you will see the option to change its size.

This may take some experimentation on your part to find a font and size that works well but you can see in my video it immediately resolves the issue of text breaking awkwardly.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Ok thanks for the videos! I just checked my site on an old laptop (both run Windows) and the text looks ok without doing anything. I’ll check my kids computer. If theirs look good I’ll let it alone. Guessing that it’s my computer. Thanks again!!
