Article about 2FA misleads about the authenticator app

I recently came across an article about 2FA[1]. The article is quite mixed up with being generic about using an authenticator app and suggesting to use Google Authenticator. For example there’s a section titled ‘Setup with Google Authenticator’ whose first line reads ‘To set up two step authentication via **an authenticator application** on your device, …’ (emphasis mine).

The article seems to be biased when it plainly refers to ‘Google Authenticator’ when the article should have have been generic about suggesting an authenticator app possibly mentioning ‘Google Authenticator’ as an example. I’m suggesting this as Google Authenticator is not the only one that could be used for 2FA and this should be made explicit in the article. For example there’s andOTP[2].

  • Hi there,

That support page has not been updated in quite some time, and at the time it was written, Google Authenticator was the only authenticator app that was available.

I have updated the page to fix this.

Thanks for helping to fix this. I just saw the updated article it still seems to need some tweaking as some part of it still seems to be referring to the method of setting up 2FA using an app as the “Google authenticator method”. Particularly the “Logging In” section seems to be needing more upation.

  • We’re currently in process of updating all documentation on WordPress.com, so we’ll make sure that gets updated, thank you.
