Asked to log in to comment

Despite being logged in, starting two days ago, when I try to comment on a blog, I’m being asked to log in:

The thing is, when I provide the password to log in, the dialog disappears, and when I’m back at the site, the comment is not visible anywhere.

This issue occurs with multiple browsers, and while I’m sure someone will tell me to clear the cache (done), upgrade the browsers (done), clear the cookies (done), and restart the machine (done), none of that helps.

Plus, the fact it’s happening using multiple browsers simultaneously tells me it’s unlikely to be at my end (they don’t share cookies or cache).

I remember something similar before, but I can’t find that thread.

Does anyone know of a solution, or is this one of them developers’ improvements we keep hearing about? Yes, I kid, but before I spend time trying to fix something that isn’t fixable at my end, I’d like to know if this is on WP’s shoulders.

FYI, the problem does not exist when using the Reader (something I loathe to do and never use other than to test issues). Nor is there a problem if I’m responding to an existing comment instead of initiating a new comment.

This—again—seems to suggest that it is a WP issue rather than a local issue.

But I’m willing to be schooled and proven wrong as long as I can fix the issue.

Hi @disperser, are you seeing that on every site? Can you try commenting here to see if you see the same issue?

For what it’s worth, I’ve not seen other cases of this cropping up yet, but I’ll keep my eyes open. Also, let us know if you’d like us to remove the screenshot.

I take that back . . . now it’s also not letting me respond to comments without logging in.

Also, when I’m logged in to my dashboard, after a little while (not sure how long) it’s now logging me out and asking me to log back in.

I just had to log on here again to update you:

I tried leaving a comment at the site you linked you provided. It asked me to log in, but then, when I did, I got this message

However, I can’t see the message I left (“This is a test”). This is where it should appear:

    Like this post?

One other thing. It did allow me to “like” the post. On other sites, when I’m having this issue, I can’t even “like” the post.

This site is acting differently than other sites. Here, it logs me off after some minutes, and I have to log in before I can post or reply to a comment.

At other sites, it lets me compose the comment (I see my avatar below the comment box, so it knows who I am) and then asks me to log in to prove it’s me. And then it blows the comment away.

This is strangely familiar to me, so I’m sure I’ve experienced this before, but can’t find a reference to it either on my email or here.

I’ll do a search for my past posts to see if I can find it.

Thanks, I also remember an issue with comments last year that was similar to this, but I’ve not seen anything like that for a while now.

I do see quite a few web sessions open for you; would you like us to clear those out to see if it helps? You would need to log back in. Also, what browser do you use primarily, and have you recently installed any system-wide privacy apps that could be blocking cookies?

OK, this is getting annoying. I’m being asked to log in on my dashboard and here every few minutes. Meaning, despite being on the same browser, the two tabs don’t recognize the other is signed on.

I’m asking to be kept signed in, to no avail.

Final interesting bit, then I’ll shut up.

The issue resolved itself in Firefox, but not Edge. To be clear, I’ve not done anything since the last comment.

I’m just going to stay off WP until tomorrow and see if anything has changed.

You should see me logged in on my phone, and on both Firefox and Edge on my PC, probably multiple tabs in each. Some are Dashboard, others are posts I’m tracking, and some are this session.

That is my usual MO. It’s never used me issues before.

Unless by “web sessions” you mean something else.

To answer your other question, despite not liking it, I allow all cookies on WordPress because blocking third-party cookies causes issues.

I’ve not installed any new privacy apps.

Hey! Good to hear it’s working on Firefox. We can’t help too much with troubleshooting problems with your browser, but Edge tends to be a little less compatible with things than Firefox and Chrome (and other Chrome-based browsers).

Each “web session” as @supernovia mentioned would basically be one place that you are logged in. So if you log in to your account from a given device on Edge, that’s one of your sessions, and then logging in to the account on the same device through Firefox would be another session.

As long as cookies can be used by WordPress.com on your browser, you should not see this come back on Firefox. I cannot speak too much as to specifically why Edge is not working for you.

Just to be clear, I was having the same issue in Firefox.

To my knowledge, there is nothing I did at my end to “fix” the problem.

All the stuff I mentioned (cache clearing, logging in and out, restarting browsers and computer) was earlier, and none of it worked to fix anything.

Firefox started working all on its own a short while ago.

Edge is still a problem. There is no reason it should be logging me off from my dashboard. It has never done that before, and it started AFTER I had issues with the comments.

As mentioned, I suspect something at your end because nothing has worked here, and things ‘fixing’ themselves is a good indicator.

    Anyway, I’ll try again tomorrow.
