Askimet numbers increase but shows no new spam

Thanks for clearing that up Mark. I have been wondering that for quite some time now.

nod to Trent for putting me back on track – feedbacks are not required. :)

On the Askimet blog that Mark referred to, it says, “And finally my favorite, you can now tell Akismet to discard spam that comes in on entries older than a month. (On the Akismet configuration page under Plugins.)” The way that is worded makes it sound like we have a choice. Is that the case? Can we adjust our settings on whether we want Askimet to do this or not? Or is this something that works this way across the board for all of us and individual users can’t adjust it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Afraid not. We can with the version of Akismet that is used in WordPress blogs where the software is downloaded from wp.org.

I can’t conceive of why any blogger would want to set Akismet to “hold” comments that are more than 30 days old for the purpose of checking for “false positives”. Perhaps I’m wrong but it seems to me that those who are worried they may lose a “false positive” comment seem to be right on top of their blogs and not in anyway neglectful. This being the case, then one would assume that their vigilance combined with readers reporting that their comments ought to have appeared and didn’t make the great debate seem somewhat over-blown to me. Or, have I missed something profound here and do I stand to be corrected?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think we’re discussing comments on old posts, not old comments. I too get a lot of comments on older posts, and would like the chance to review them before them being automatically deleted; it’s where most of my false-spams come from.

  • Unknown's avatar

New comments on old posts –
The solution would be to download a free blog theme from wordpress.org and import the wordpress.com contents into it to obtain that kind of control.

Agreeing with raincoaster — talking about new comments on old posts.

When I have at times had a legit comment on an old post, the commenter has never let me know that their comment didn’t show up. Perhaps they didn’t check, or if they did, they thought it was being moderated.

I’m just frustrated that it is an automatic thing that a comment on a post over 30 days old gets deleted. I’d rather it had been left alone. It didn’t take that long to look through everything Askimet caught as spam, despam legit comments, and delete the rest. Those bloggers who didn’t want to do that didn’t have to since everything in Askimet self-deleted after holding things for a time anyway.

Well, we’re on a shared blogging platform here at wordpress.com and there are over 600, 000 of us. But as I pointed out above wordpress has another option for those who want individual control and that’s the free download of a blog template from wordpress.org. Best wishes :)

So all the new comments on a 30day old post will be deleted without ask me or something?

So all the new comments on a 30day old post will be deleted without ask me or something?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes. That’s why it’s necessary that you check the Akismet spam filter and mark the ones that are not spam regularly. Please read this as well https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=7559&replies=32#post-50387

thanks timethief and sorry for the double post…

The latest version of Akismet (it’s full details are on the blog at http://akismet.com) has a feature which removes all comments on posts over 30 days old. Spam focused on those posts. So now if a comment is made that Akismet says is spam, it gets shot immediately and removed. If Akismet is not sure, it will appear in Akismet.
    But it still keeps count.

Do we have the option to turn off that feature here? i actually get a lot of comments on my old posts so maybe the filter catch some comments that is not spam.

  • Unknown's avatar

No we do not have the option of turning it off. Those who have wordpress.org blogs because they run on different software and what one does on their blog does not effect all others. But we can’t. We are on a multiuser wordpress.com blogging platform and there are over 690,000 of us. There is no option and it’s unlikely that we ever will have such an option. I accept that others may not find it convenient to check their spam filters but I don’t feel it’s a big deal at all.

  • Unknown's avatar

Checking the spam filter won’t do much if Akismet is ensuring we have no option to see comments on posts 30+ days old. It will make no difference at all.

Right now, as usual, 8 of my top ten posts are over 30 days old. I know quite well I’m getting real comments on them but Akismet is killing them off, thinking them as spam. If people get their comments deleted they generally don’t say much unless they’re hardcore regulars who already know my email address and know their comments aren’t moderated.

Contrary to the implication, it is not that difficult for WordPress to make the old system (ie collecting and displaying your Spam comments on old posts) available as an option. I mean, we had it until two weeks ago as standard. A simple “autodelete spam on old posts” yes/no button in the Dashboard would take care of it, and that version of Akismet we know already works just fine with our blogs.

  • Unknown's avatar

    i totally agree with raincoaster

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s cool that you two agree but it doesn’t change our reality, does it?

  • Unknown's avatar

No, but it does clarify it more than an “I disagree. I still disagree” statement.

  • Unknown's avatar

This is a support thread, right? Well I’m keeping my promise to only answer the questions asked and not enter into debates over policy. Positions on policy change can and should be articulated in feedbacks sent to staff {hint}.

  • Unknown's avatar

But to clarify, clarifications DO belong in this thread. Given your posts it appeared that you were mistaking one thing for another, and I posted to clarify. And the idea that it is never going to be an option is an opinion, which looks like entering into a debate over policy.
