Askimet numbers increase but shows no new spam

Either that or they listened to TimeThief requesting that you could turn off comments on 30 day old posts a few days ago. :)
For the record:

I do know that closing comments onold posts can be an effective way of cutting down on spam because I did this with one of my blogs and witnessed a dramatic decrease.
And I anticipated that some people would not like my idea and, like yourself would like to keep comments on their older posts open. That’s why I emphasized that what I was proposing if feasible would be optional. -
-
As what I was proposing if feasible would be optional there are no dissenters in this thread. Hopefully everyone posting to this thread remembered to send in their feedback to staff on this matter.
-
I just checked my MOST READ articles section in my Sidebar.
Of 12 articles, 9 of them are older than 30 days and many of them are a year old or older.
That shows the power of the search engines.
I don’t want to lose any legit comments from those new eyes discovering old articles for the first time.

I went away to Mexico, two weeks ago, and was getting 100 -200 or more spams every day before I left. Since I got back a week ago there’s been no spam at all or maybe 3 or 4. It’s a little spooky and disconcerting. I usually would find a couple of legitimate comments on current posts in each batch and now nothing. I hope somebody is investigating! I’m happy to lose the spam, but not the comments. Also, I’d gone through and listed all the words for Askimet to use to reject and delete spam but it never worked…those words came through loud and clear every day. A few weeks ago I installed the Grease Monkey helper app Auntie Spam (I think that’s the name) that makes it easier to see lots of spam on one page and delete it quickly, but now there’s no spam.
-
Now I’m getting a report from a longtime commenter that his comments on new posts are going into Spam…but they’re not there. But they’re also not on the site. What’s up with that?
-
-
Agreed. Actually had some spam show up in the queue today. It was strange seeing it actually.
-
So…what’s happening with the spam thing. I’m still not getting any except one or two a day and I was getting 100s.
-
-
Just to add to the mess, I’m also having problems with no spam showing up in my spam queue, yet the numbers are increasing like crazy. In the last month or so, it says that my Spam numbers went up by about 600 (it has saved me from 974 spam comments, or so it says).
And I also agree that if Snap Preview can be disabled, then this plugin should be able to be disabled. I’m sending in a feedback as well.
-
I’m having the same problem as well… I frequently get comments on old posts, or I did before this change. As others have said, the high false positive rate makes this a very disturbing change. If there’s not going to be an option to disable this “feature” is there an option to remove Akismet? In my mind, auto-deletion of valid comments without notification far outweighs any real-spam-related benefits.
-
FYI, and FWIW, i have sent the following feedback message to staff:
I have notification on http://eslresources.wordpress.com that Akismet has caught 6 spam comments on this site. This is up from zero yesterday. There is, however, nothing in my Akismet queue.
I know that comments that appear to be spam on posts over 30 days old get automatically deleted. What i find curious is that i only have 1 post over 30 days old, and it is only just that old (posted 2/27/07).
Please allow Akismet to show me what it thinks is spam. I realize that it is entirely possible that these comments were actually spam, but i will never know for sure.
-
Interestingly enough this must only affect some blogs and not others. Speaking for myself within the last few days spam on my blogs has increased dramatically and I am able to “dumpster dive” if I so choose. I don’t make this choice. I hit the “delete” and hundreds of spam are gone.
-
Got a ton this morning on the main site here and a few on the secondary site. Was rather surprised.
-
Right, I don’t like this either. I don’t really understand the intricacies of allowing us to judge what is and is not spam. But I do know that I’m not too pleased.
-
I’m delighted to have the option to dumpster dive back (but that’s just how it is in my neighborhood). I have already rescued a couple of comments wrongly Spammed, including one of my own. That said, I’ve been offline for 24 hours and have 1500+ spams to click through, which I’m too lazy to do tonight. There will be attrition…

Update:
I sent a follow up this morning when the number caught doubled to 12 (with nothing in the queue). Just checked my spam queue, and four of the comments caught by Akismet are back! Yea!
-
*sigh*
The blow-by-blow account continues. BTW, i’m only posting these updates so that people can see that something is being worked on with Akismet. Today’s support submission to Akismet:
The number of caught spam is still 12, but the 4 that appeared in the Akismet queue yesterday are gone again. I did not delete them, and it certainly hasn’t been 15 days.
-
Before my *sigh* is misinterpreted, i would like to add that it was meant in a spirit of commiseration, since i doubt support staff is thrilled to get my most recent message on an issue that is proving to be difficult to pin down.
I appreciate everything that the Automattic folks do to provide excellent support for their products :-)
