Is it fair to ask people to donate money to me so I can improve my blog?

That’s all up to you. If people don’t think it’s faire, they won’t give any money. Instead of asking people for money, you could upgrade to the Explorer Plan where you can earn mony with Wordads.
What would you need money for? You can do a lot on a free wordpress.com website.

I just think I could do more with my blog if I had some money. I don’t have a job so I don’t have a steady income of money to upgrade. If I were to ask for donations I would only need at least $100 a year. I know that they offer a year of the upgrade for no charge but that would mean being able to make a steady profit from my blog in the span of a year in order to keep the upgrade. You can correct me if I don’t make sense.

When you upgrade to a paid plan you get the custom domain free for the first year, but you still have to pay for the plan itself.
Personally I would say you can do a lot on the Free Plan.
