Assumed Knowledge

Hello. I wonder, is there a primer for showing new bloggers how to do things on WordPress? I ask because I am stumbling over exactly how (and, indeed *why*) you do things in a particular way that appear incongruous to me.
Example, I want to post a short link to another blog or something. In theory I should just right-click, copy link, go to my post, click a link button, fill out form, enter. Hey presto, link is done.
Not on WP. I have tried to find out what I should do via your help topics and I am just more confused. I have *no idea* what “anchor text” is. Apparently, if I figure out how to do that, the link button on my posting page will magically come to life. It remains resolutely dead so I clearly have failed so far.
I have an option where I can type out the text to link, highlight it, then click add link… Um, why do I have to type every link out that I want to add? How is this making things quicker?
Clearly I am an idiot. Thank you for reinforcing this in my head. If you can contain yourselves long enough, could you tell me if such a primer (bearing in mind my post title here!) exists? I’d like to enjoy this place but a little *useful* help would… help.
Thanks.
