Astronomical symbols in Latex

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m writing some posts about astrophysics and I’m using Latex for the equations, Many of the equations refer to properties of bodies in the solar system such as the Sun, Moon and planets, and the correct notation requires using the astronomical symbols for these objects. Would it be possible to add support for the Latex package wasysym as well as the ones you currently have?
    Thanks for your help.

    Could you point me to an astronomical symbol that isn’t currently displaying correctly or provide an example of an equation that isn’t rendering quite right?

    Here’s some test Latex code which gives a “formula does not parse” error:

    Symbols that display properly in Latex but not in WordPress.com:
    <p>
    <p align=center>$latex displaystyle mercuryvenusearthmarsjupitersaturnuranusneptuneastrosunfullmoonleftmoonrightmoonnewmoon &fg=000000&bg=eedbbd$</p>
    <p>

    This pdf page (which is a direct export of the Latex to PDF) shows what the symbols should look like.

    Thanks for passing that along! I did a bit of digging, and it looks like the astronomical symbols are only included in certain LaTeX packages like wasysym here:

    Click to access wasysym.pdf

    We only use the following packages at WordPress.com:

    – amsmath

    – amsfonts

    – amssymb

    From my research, the characters you’re looking for are not included in these packages so I’m afraid they won’t display correctly at WordPress.com.

    Yes, I knew that these symbols weren’t in the packages currently in the WordPress system. What I asked in my original post was whether the package wasysym could be added so the symbols would be displayed. Would that be possible?

    Thanks.

    Understood! As of right now, there aren’t plans to expand our LaTeX packages, but I’ll log the suggestion for the future.
