I would like to change my theme to atahualpa so that I can collaborate with a colleague, but I cannot find it. My colleague has sent a link but that didn’t seem to help either…

You can’t use Atahualpa, because you “only” can these themes on WordPress.com:
https://theme.wordpress.com/ (over 330)

atahualpa is the wordpress theme that my colleague chose recently – he said I would find it among the themes if I scrolled down, but it doesn’t seem to be there.

I understand you the first time. But you don’t understand me:
Uploading Custom Themes
Uploading a third-party or custom theme is possible only on self-hosted sites using the WordPress.org software. This means that you cannot upload any themes to your WordPress.com site. Learn more.
Instead of uploading a theme, try checking out the current theme collection to see if there’s an option there that will work well for you.

Sadly, no. My colleague and I want to work collaboratively using the same theme. I have just emailed to check if he is a .org person and not a .com as that might explain the problem.
He said that all I had to do was go to themes, scroll down and click Atahualpa when it came up. But it didn’t. So I got confused. This is only day 2 using wordpress!! :-(

Ok, the answer remains the same: You can’t use Atahualpa on WordPress.com blogs like http://chilton1199.wordpress.com/

You and your colleague are confusing WordPress.COM hosted blogs with WordPress.ORG installs. Third party themes cannot be installed on WordPress.COM hosted blogs.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different username accounts, logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The only themes we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs are licensed and adapted to run on our multiuser software the themes are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and in your dashboard at > Appearance > Themes
There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:
upload any third party themes,
create child themes,
create our own themes,
edit templates,
create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.Relevant support docs:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/There is no upgrade you can purchase here that changes that reality.
WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can create themes, upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, and edit the database, etc. If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install. To locate themes for WordPress.ORG software installs go to https://wordpress.org/themes/
We do not provide support for WordPress.ORG software installs. We provide support only for WordPress.COM hosted blogs.

Tell your colleague he needs to read this http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ and stop telling you to do what cannot be done on a WordPress.COM hosted blog like http://chilton1199.wordpress.com/

Thanks everyone for the help, and sorry for wasting time. Everything sorted now.
Wasn’t my poor colleague’s fault – he didn’t realise I was trying to work on .com when I should have been on .org -
@chilton1199, it wasn’t a waste of time, and you are most welcome. Best of luck with your new site.
