Attach Categories to existing posts?

  I have the Categories widget. I have typed some categories. I have checked the boxes and clicked “apply.” THEY DO NOT APPEAR ON MY BLOG; it just says “uncategorized.” The guidance says “Note: Only categories that are attached to posts will be displayed in the widget.” SO HOW DO I DO THAT? Thanks.

  edit a Post – then assign the categories while in edit mode – then Update Post (to save changes) –
