Attaching a new domain name to my site

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to change the name of my site if possible. It has not been used and I would like to take advantage of the purchased theme to start a different project. The problem seems to be that I have assigned a domain name to the site and can not get round this. When I change the name it always returns to the original site name …help

    Hi there!

Can you let me know what site you’re having trouble with? Once I have that information, I’ll be better able to help.

    Thank you!

Hi, I bought the domain name http://duncanbyappointment.com, which was linked to a blog (wordpress). I used a theme called ‘shelf’ (which I also paid for). I would now like to remove ‘duncanbyappointment’ and buy a new domain name and start a new blog using ‘shelf’. Wrongly or rightly the obvious solution I arrived at was to try and change the name from the redundant blog (duncanby….) to the new one. This appears to be impossible or beyond my limited ability. Help would be appreciated.

It looks like you’re most of the way there!

In order to use a new domain name – rather than “duncanbyappointment.com” – you just simply need to purchase another domain name.

When registering a domain name, you are purchasing that *exact* set of letters/numbers and is not something that can be modified after purchase. As you discovered, you can change your underlying WordPress.com site address from “duncanbyappointment.wordpress.com” to “cafeattheverdict.wordpress.com” – but to use a new domain name, you will need to purchase that domain.

Here are more instructions on how to purchase this domain:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

After your purchase, I can then link your new domain to your value bundle, so that future renewals will apply the free domain credit to your new domain. Your “duncanbyappointment.com” domain will then need to be renewed manually – or if you no longer want to own this domain, you can simply let the domain expire.

I know that was a lot of information, so let me know if you have any questions.
