Attaching my blog to my website without changing address

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

Okay, I’ve moved my http://cathyscholl.com/ website over to wordpress.com along with the domain mapping upgrade.
NOW I’d like to connect my http://cathyscholl.wordpress.com/ blog to the site…WITHOUT changing the address. Is that possible? How?
I know about the subdomain mapping but won’t that change my address to cathyscholl.com/blog or something along those lines?

I’ve read here previously that I am better off staying with a wordpress address for several reasons…most of which I don’t recall.
Perhaps you could remind me why this is a good idea…search engines? wordpress referrals?

ALSO…if I have the no ads upgrade on my website and I attach the blog will the no ads be passed along to the blog as well?
    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You have purchased a domain cathyscholl.com and you purchased domain mapping from the root blog here cathyscholl.wordpress.com for that domain. The root blog is redirecting correctly to your domain.

I do not comprehend what you want to accomplish.

Mapping a subdomain would make the link to the second site something like blog/cathyscholl.com/ . I’m still not completely clear on whether you can map a TLD (top level domain) and a subdomain of the TLD to different sites here. This is something staff would have to verify.

What you can do is to create a custom menu for each site and then through the use of a custom link in that custom menu, link to the other site in the top navigation. This is probably the easiest and least expensive way to do it since you would not need a second domain mapping upgrade.

The No-Ads Upgrade is like every other wordpress.com upgrade. It applies only to one blog and only for one year. http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

On reasons to keep a wordpress.COM URL for your site, that has to be weighed against your need to create a clear, personal brand and in my opinion that will outweigh the search engine ranking side of things.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I brought my cathyscholl.com domain to wordpress.
I mapped it to a blog called cathyschollfuturewebsite.
    That is my WEBSITE.

I also have a BLOG here at cathyscholl.wordpress.com
I want that blog to connect to the website without losing the cathyscholl.wordpress.com address

Is the only way to connect the two by subdomain mapping?

I don’t want it to become cathyscholl.com/blog (or whatever) I believe it was you who originally gave me the reasons why the wordpress address is more desirable….which I wouldn’t mind hearing again. Not 100% sure but I think it was you who gave me that advice. Hope that clarifies it. Thanks.

Oops…I wrote that last comment without seeing any of your comments…It was meant for timethief.

@thesacredpath So does that mean there is an advantage search engine-wise to keeping a wordpress address? I agree with your comment about branding. Will think about that…

Sorry, I didn’t understand what you said about TLD, etc. Maybe you misunderstood me? I hadn’t yet posted my explanation (above) when you wrote that.

Another option is just to keep the two and not link them(?)

@timethief Yes, no ads is for one blog. So if my current blog becomes a page on my cathyscholl.com website thru subdomain mapping is it then part of the same (one) blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

WordPress.COM has a ton of search engine page rank (Google PR of 9/10). Any subdomain on wordpress.COM (such as blog.wordpress.com) will benefit from being a subdomain of wordpress.com.

But, with you creating a brand with cathyscholl.com, having your blog tied to that domain name will help with your brand. Your website and your blog will both help each other.

Since cathyscholl.com consists of pages and does not have any posting activity, one thing that could be done is to move your blog over to cathyscholl.com and have it as a tab at the top (perhaps Blog). This gets the two under the same name without having to map a subdomain. In my example, your blog page URL would be cathyscholl.com/blog/ . The page you create for your blog would not have to be called “blog.” You could name the page something else such as “Let’s Talk” and then your blog URL would be cathyscholl.com/lets-talk/

@thesacredpath cathyscholl.com/blog is fine if I want to go that route.
I like the word blog and having a blog tab is fine the question was just whether or not I want to give up the wordpress.com address.

It seems that most traffic to my website and blog come either from someone who knows and googles my name or from me posting a link on facebook, twitter, etc. so I am not sure how important search engine ranking is for me.

When I google my name the website comes up #1 and blog is #5 on the search.

So if I add my blog as a page to my site I would just import it? No need to map? That’s good news. I still hate to give up the cathyscholl.wordpress.com address…wish there was a way I could keep it but I guess there isn’t if I combine the two. Maybe I can find something else to do with that address :)

Last thing…so if I just import the blog to cathyscholl.com as a page then the no ads upgrade I have on cathyscholl.com will also carry over to the blog, correct? That’s another advantage.

    Okay, thanks!

Facebook and twitter are picked up by the search engines, so that not only helps build your brand, but also helps with your search engine ranking.

Yes, no need to map it. You will just export your posts and then import them into the site and then you can set the old blog to private. Since you have some traffic coming to your blog and you have indexed by the search engines, the site redirect might be a good option (it is the same cost as domain mapping at $12). You can then redirect all traffic that would come from a link to your blog, either at FB or twitter, or in from a search engine to your main site and to the blog. That way there aren’t any file not found errors and your visitors get to your site.

    Site Redirect

Since the blog would be part of the main site after importing it, the no ads upgrade you have for the site would cover the blog as well since they are together.

    Great. Here’s one last question…

How about subscribers to my blog? Do I lose them if I transfer it?
Do they come along to the new site if I have the redirect?
And I guess I would lose all my previous stats too?

  • Unknown's avatar

Unfortunately, yes you will lose those subscribers. With domain mapping to the subdomain you would not, but that would be an extra $12 per year plus the no ads upgrade for the blog if you wanted that.

You can always keep them separate for now and do the links back and forth via a custom menu, but the longer you wait, the more subscribers you will get.

One other thought is that you could perhaps make a couple of announcement posts on the blog over the next week or two asking subscribers to head over to the main website and subscribe there since you will be moving the blog into the website.

I’m on my way out the door for a hour or so.

    Mahalo sacredpath :)

(I was recently house sitting in Maui.)

Something I just thought of…that may or may not present a problem is that I have turned off the footer/sidebar on all of my website pages…since I want it to look like a website and not a blog. If I import my blog as a page on the site it may be that I will either have to lose the footer/sidebar there as well or add it to all my site pages…in other words I think I have to either have it throughout or not. Not 100% sure about that but I think so.

That might be the issue which would keep me from combining my website and blog because I definitely don’t want a sidebar on my website but I definitely do want it on my blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you stay with Fusion, this can work. Instead of setting your site to have no sidebars/bottom bars at appearance > theme options, you would set it to have sidebars and then you would open each “site” page in the editor and set the page template to full-width, no sidebar. Then you could have a sidebar on the blog related pages, but none on the site related pages.

  • Unknown's avatar

Gaaahhh! Ignore what I said above. I set my test blog to Fusion (I thought) and checked the stuff only to find out that it either did not take when I set it or I hallucinated changing it. Fusion does not have a no-sidebar page template.

You are back to using the custom menu solution then and just linking back and forth.

Staff did verify that you can have a top level domain name AND a subdomain of that domain name mapped to different blogs. Both blogs have to be under the same username/account, but that is about the only restriction.

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a couple friends who live on Maui. One of these days I have to get over there to see them. I’m kind of hoping to find a house-sitting deal south of me here on Hawaii Island for perhaps 6 months or a year and then look for a place to buy while there.

  • Unknown's avatar

“You are back to using the custom menu solution then and just linking back and forth.”

Not sure I understand…In other words, keeping them separate?
Also not sure if I understand this…

“Staff did verify that you can have a top level domain name AND a subdomain of that domain name mapped to different blogs. Both blogs have to be under the same username/account, but that is about the only restriction.”

Are you saying I can have cathyscholl.com and cathyscholl.com/blog in separate locations?

And you’re looking to buy a place in Maui? (did I at least get that right?) I don’t know of any situations on the Big Island but I know many people in Maui, I can keep you in mind if I hear of anything.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Yes, keeping them separate.

You can assign site.com to one site (as you have done) and then you can assign a subdomain of that site such as blog.site.com to another site as long as the two sites are under the same user account here.

You can have cathyscholl.com (as you do now)

And then have blog.cathyscholl.com for the blog

Each will be separate sites, but connected by the domain name. The two sites you will edit or manage separately just as you do now. The only bad thing is you have to pay for another domain mapping and no ads upgrade (for the blog). One benefit of this would be that your subscribers would not have sign up again.
