attachment page

    Hello!
I don’t think I want any of my images in my Media library to be linked to an attachment page or media file. However unless I am creating a Gallery, I cannot see a way to NOT link images to an attachment page which seems to be the default. Is there a way to set the default to ‘none’ so that by default my images are just embedded in my posts and not attached to any other pages?
    Many thanks,
    Eli

    Hi Eli,

When adding an image to a post (either within a gallery or as a single image) this is when you can select the image’s link-to option.

To have it link to ‘nowhere,’ instead of choosing Attachment Page or Media File, choose Custom URL:

And in the Link address field enter just ‘#’. This way clicking the link won’t lead to any other page.

    Thank you Alex!!
    2 more little questions, if I may…
    – Is is possible to change the link AFTER the image has already been uploaded?
    – Also, do you think it’s a bad idea to NOT link the images to either an attachment page of media file?
    Many thanks,
    Eli

    Hi Eli,

That link_to option can change everytime you use it, because it’s really just part of the page or post’s HTML, not part of the image itself.

To change the link later, edit your post, then edit the image (hover over it and click the pencil icon), and you can edit the link. Then click ‘update’ to save the changes for the post as well.

    – Also, do you think it’s a bad idea to NOT link the images to either an attachment page of media file?

There’s no technical downside by not providing a link. The Attachment page and media file page will still exist, even if you don’t link to them, so they will still be indexed by search engines.

It’s really just a preference. If you have a really great image someone may want to share, that media file page and the attachment page can help them access the highest resolution of the image. But if it’s just a small bit of your content, not providing the link may help keep them on that page instead of going to the image’s page.
