Attaining the site domain of a deleted blog

  • Unknown's avatar

A month ago I was trying to get a specific site domain and contacted the blog owner about it (he was using a free account much like me). He agreed to ‘free’ said domain and subsequently deleted his site. From my understanding that domain should be put back into the pool for available domains at some point. Currently I still get the prompt that the domain is already taken, however. When should I expect the new domain to be selectable?

If this question has already be answered somewhere I apologise in advance, unfortunately my research didn’t yield any definitive results.

    Thank you!

    Hey thadp!

According to the support page https://en.support.wordpress.com/delete-site

Deleting a site permanently removes it and you’ll never be able to re-use its WordPress.com address (such as yourgroovysite.wordpress.com).

I think your only solution can also be found on the support page:

It is possible to reverse a site deletion for the first 30 days after a site is closed. If you realize you closed your site in error, please contact us immediately. We will be able to assist you in restoring your site during this 30 day window. Once the 30 days have passed, all of your site data is purged and cannot be restored, and the site address is deleted and cannot be reused.

So I think you’ll have to contact the person you were trying to get the domain from and ask them to contact WordPress support to try to recover the website!

From there, I think your best bet might be to ask them to change their domain name, which should free up the domain. Make sure they don’t delete the domain.

He agreed to ‘free’ said domain and subsequently deleted his site.

What was the address of the site?

(he was using a free account much like me)

If the site address ended in WordPress.com by deleting it (and if more than a month has passed) he has ensured that the site cannot be recovered and reused by himself or anyone else. The correct procedure should have been to transfer the site to another WordPress.com account.

Hello, just adding here that if that person did delete their WordPressdotcom site within the last 30 days, please ask him or her to post in this forum thread while logged in to their site owner account and request that WordPressdotcom Staff reverse the site deletion. Once that’s been done, he or she can follow the guide that @themagicrobot linked to and transfer ownership of the site to you.

After 30 days, it’s no longer possible to reverse a site deletion.

Once the 30 days have passed, all of your site data is purged and cannot be restored, and the site address is deleted and cannot be reused.
