Attempting to add MX record results in error

Existing MX entry in WP: MX – imperialgrp.com – mail handled by WordPress.com email forwarding

I am trying to add an MX record so that my domain emails for imperialgrp.com are processed by ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM with a priority of 1.

Instead of success, This is the error message I see: “This record cannot be added, as it conflicts with an existing WordPress.com record.”

I am not able to add this MX record in any priority 1,10 or 20.

In an attempt to make this work, I deleted all 5 forwards that I had for imperialgrp.com – to no avail.

Please help as your documentation does not cover this and I am really stuck.

    Hi there,

As you noted, there is currently an MX record which indicates that mail is handled by WordPress.com. That record has to be deleted in order for you to add in any other MX record. Once you delete it (by clicking the little trash can icon off to the right hand side), then you should be able to add the 5 Google MX records without any issues.

Let me know if you run in to troubles and I’ll be happy to help!

    Thanks.
Just curious, is there a way to not lose my email forwarding during this process? I’d prefer to have WP forward all emails till the Google MX goes live.
    Best.

There is not, I’m afraid. The good news however is that these days .com DNS records propagate in a few hours at the most and about 15 minutes in best case circumstances. So if you make the change later at night you will be able to minimize the chances of misrouted email.
