Attributing Featured Images Needs to be Easier

Giving proper attribution to photos used as a featured image needs to be made easier. As it stands, there is no easy way to attribute a featured image to its author, and absolutely no way to do it properly. (Unless I’m missing something).
It’s quite frustrating, as I’m quite the stickler about attribution. The only real option I have is to put the attribution at the end of the post, but if my post is paginated, I would technically have to put the attribution throughout the whole post at the end of each page if I wanted to be proper about it.

The solution is easy enough: there should be an option to add a captions to featured images. I’m no software engineer, but I don’t see how such a feature would be an enormous undertaking, and I’m quite perplexed as to why no one ever thought to make captioning featured images an option.

How does everyone else attribute featured images to the author?

  • Thanks for your feedback, and glad you’re a stickler about attribution. I see placement of image credits in different places (at bottoms of posts as you mention, or even at the top right, in smaller font, before the post. Some custom-made themes have a caption in the corner of the featured image (like The Daily Post).

In the absence of a more automatic, elegant solution, you can also consider bookmarking the number of excellent sites providing free-to-use images: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/04/30/free-images/ I use Unsplash fairly often, for example, for wide featured images on posts for which I don’t have my own photos. In these cases, no attribution is necessary.
