Audio: cuts short on other devices

  My audio works fine on a computer, when I listen on an iPad or iPhone my three minute audio cuts short, plays 3/4 of the way through. I am using an m4a.

  HI there!

  So the way media works on the web has a few steps, and all of these steps must be working:

  1. The file must stored in its entirety and correctly formatted
  2. The internet connection must fully transfer the file from its hosting to the device that is opening it (if you’re streaming the audio from your website, this would be to your Browser)
  3. The device must be able to play the file type

  Since the file plays correctly on your Computer, the first step seems to be fine. If #1 was broken the file wouldn’t play anywhere.

  iPads and iPhones should have no trouble with m4a, and since they’re playing the beginning of the file, that’s not the issue.

  So it sounds like your iPad or iPhone just isn’t streaming the entirety of the file because of an error with your internet connection. It’s taking longer to download the last 1/4 of the file than it does to listen to the first 3/4 of it.

  Let’s test it this way: instead of streaming the audio file, download the file from your website to your iPad. If the file plays completely once its stored on your iPad, that confirms the issue is not with the file or its storage, or with your iPad, but rather the internet connection while streaming the audio file.

  Thanks Alex,

  I tried other file formats, same think happened in slightly different ways. When I downloaded to my desktop it played fully. Like you are saying, must be on the users end with internet connection. I am going to provide the media player as well as a link to download so there are options for everyone depending on their wifi or internet connection.

  Sounds like a good plan. :)

  Providing the player and direct file is common thing that Podcasters (who work almost entirely in audio) do as well, just to make sure that everyone can access the content, no matter what.
