Audio player changed appearance

  • Unknown's avatar

    @songsofhope883:

    The “new” player goes right across each post, and over any right aligned picture I have in each post. Not good.

    @altsoundings:

    All my right aligned images have one to five black audio player bars across them. Is there any code available to modify the width?

    @alisonearlsaloud:

    Surely the subtlety of old look player was more compatible with the wide range of theme and visual styles developed by WordPress

    Hi there.
    While the staff answers, try this:
    Audio player centered

    <div style="width:290px;margin:auto;">Shortcode of the audio player here</div>

    Audio player not centered

    div style="width:290px;margin:none;">Shortcode of the audio player here</div>

    Just to make things clear one more time, the problems are much more diverse than just the positioning of the player. They also concern the fact that the HTML5 prototype that is now unleashed upon us, is functionally inferior to the Flash player it’s supposed to replace.

    Like I said before, it doesn’t respect any existing user settings for the player across all posts in a blog. It breaks existing user customizations of play/pause/volume buttons, player colors, etc. It does not show names or titles, so when using playlists people cannot even see what it is they’re hearing.

    It’s simply irresponsible of the WP people to force a fundamentally different prototype player upon us before such essential problems have been solved. Do they think we (and our blogs) are some kind of guinea pigs? That’s how this feels.

    I totally agree, @henkvansetten: see my other posts in this thread.

    Though I have been with WP for 6 years, I am a relatively unsophisticated blogger, do not use customization, and upgraded my premium theme to utilize audio for very simple spoken word posts.

    I finally discovered yesterday that, using Firefox, I can no longer play/hear audio on my own site or those of other WP bloggers, and have had to revert to Safari, which I literally have not touched for years.

    Mea culpa, both are older browser versions (Hey, I myself am older!), though hardly grounds to have the blogrug pulled out from under me/us without the courtesy of a heads-up explanation.

    Hi Pete,

    Currently, it isn’t possible to change the width of the audio shortcode. The shortcode will automatically expand to fit the full width of your content column. You could do it through CSS, but that would require the purchase of the Custom Design upgrade shown here…

    No, it is posible, see my post, @jeremeylduvall:
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/audio-player-changed-appearance?replies=14#post-1789673

    It works! ;)

    Thanks Galois … your suggestion works for me re being able to resize the player. I had audio titles not embedded but immediately above … almost hugging the player. However these titles are now all widely spaced from the player. But still a great interim solution.

    Still no word from WordPress! Shabby indeed.

    Although the solution above helps, it does not solve the major problem, which is the fact that we ALL want the flash player back. I have over 300 posts and cannot even imagine changing the settings for each one of them.
    I have replied to one of the WP news emails (I received at least 2 per day) asking if anyone from WP is aware of the player problem. I will post an update here as soon as I hear (if I do) from them.

    The new audio player breaks my site page designs too. This is mainly because the width of the player has changed. If you put the default width and CSS padding on the new player, it should work. I would like the ability to change the size of the player, but the default should be the same as the old player.

    Thanks for the solution alexvnet,
    …but this only helps those who have premium accounts.

    I have been asked to contribute to the main string on this subject. I did not find this conversation when first searching for it. It’s interesting to hear what you are all saying. I think the suggestion that the old Flash Player should be default and the new one an option which hopefully could also be customised, would be a good way forward. This is what I wrote first of all and I am awaiting a reply, as you all are:

    I have noticed that all my blogs with the audio upgrade are showing a new, rather ugly, audio player. It crosses the whole page and interferes with some of my images.

    I can see it is superior in functionality and perhaps this is why it has been changed.

    First of all, would there be an option to revert to the old player if one wished to?

    I will need to redesign some of my posts and pages if this player is to remain in place.

    An other possibility which would improve the look of it would be to reduce (or change) the colour tone from the strong grey and to make it less wide on the page.

    I’ll wait to hear if these things are possible before making any adjustments to my pages and posts.

    Thank you, Elizabeth

    The blog I need help with is stpaulrepository.com.

    My needs appear to be similar to that of stpaulrepository. I have the audio upgrade and simply wish to have an audio player that does not interfere with the design and layout of my pages and posts. Something less obtrusive in colour and size (e.g. the old Flash player) would be best.
    I realise that there are a wide range of unique needs across WordPress users so something that benefits some will always have the possibility of affectively some others negatively. However this change to the audio player AND, for me more importantly, the recent removal of Advanced Image options, don’t seem to be improvements to anyone. Why are the Happiness Engineers dumbing everything down to the point that anyone who wants something that has any unique appeal at all had to be able to ‘code’? Is it to drive us all from WordPress.COM to WordPress.ORG or simply away? Are the WordPress.COM users nothing but an inconvenience? It’s disheartening for so many to be dealing with these issues when they’ve spent years building up their sites … and their subscribers. For so many, their WordPress blogs are the expression of things that matter so much in their lives. So to have those expressions damaged or, in some cases, rendered useless is actually very significant.

    This does work, in that it shortens the new player:
    <div style=”width:290px;margin:none;”>Shortcode of the audio player here</div>

    However, I have about 300 posts, all with an audio player. To go through 300 posts and make this html change to the code of every post is a huge job!

    I need to play several mp3 files. How can I do with the new player?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Because the title of this thread “Audio player changed appearance” may not indicate clearly enough there are serious player problems for many of us, I have just posted a new title “WordPress staff ignoring HTML5 audio player problems” — referring to this thread, and asking WordPress staff to finally take notice of our justified complaints in this thread, and to finally react adequately to address the problems.

    I hope this will help. I’m really fed up with all this, and beginning to consider to migrate both my blogs to somewhere else. If I will have to recode all my posts anyway because of this player nonsense, why not? Sigh…

    alexvnet, how do you make the change in CSS?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
    I have just seen that it is now impossible to listen to all the audio files in the posts that I wrote before April 18th. I really don’t want to do anything manually as I have been blogging since February 2010 (and paid for the upgrade). I am French and there’s nothing in French forums about this problem. So I really don’t know what to do. Thank you for your help.
