Audio Shortcode not working on Free Plan

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

I would like to know if the audio shortcode is still supposed to work on free plans website because it’s not anymore for me. I have used a dropbox url, this one:

    [audio src="https://www.dropbox.com/s/c3whp4ejkdd6sj8/FranceInter2006-01-05.MP3" /]

which does work well in a Chrome Incognito window.

When I put it in the shortcode like so:
    [audio https://www.dropbox.com/s/c3whp4ejkdd6sj8/FranceInter2006-01-05.MP3 ]

    , it just doesn’t start,

like the following page that was given in reference on another thread and that is also not working anymore either (or for me at least):

    Thanks in advance for this.

    hi,

I have tagged modlook for a Staff to help you with this.
Thank you for your patience while they get back to you.

  • Hi there,

That code should work – the test post you linked to above doesn’t work because the dropbox link I used to test it there is no longer valid. I’ve updated it to use the Dropbox link you provided above. Can you please check it now?

If it won’t work in my test post either, what browser are you using? And can you please give a link to the post where you are using the shortcode so I can check it there directly as well?

    Hi Kokkieh,

    Thanks for your response!

Here is the message I get by clicking on https://justanothertestsiteblog.wordpress.com/2018/02/13/testing-audio/:

“This site is marked private by its owner. If you would like to view it, you’ll need permission from the site owner. Request an invite and we’ll send your username to the site owner for their approval.”

    Hi kastororama,

Thanks for the link, I can’t see any issues with the audio shortcode itself. I’m able to listen to the file by visiting the Dropbox link but it won’t play back on your site once added as a shortcode.

We’ll do some further testing and come back to you.

    Hi again,

It appears Dropbox requires a parameter at the end of audio file URLs in order to make them playable — but this parameter isn’t currently supported in our shortcode. I’ve reported this to our developers so they can take a closer look and we’ll be in touch as soon as we have more news.

Thanks for your patience while we looked into this, it appears the change on Dropbox’s end is affecting other platforms too, not just WordPress.com. Our audio shortcode will need to be updated in order to support this new parameter, which will take some time. Until then, our developers have suggested two possible workarounds:

    1. Upload the audio file to your Media Library (which will require a paid plan).
    2. Link to the .mp3 file in your content — which will require people to visit a Dropbox URL to play the file.

Thank you very much for your help, it is appreciated. Can you please keep me updated as soon as it is developped?

Also, I was wondering if the problem would be the same if I was using Google Drive for the MP3 instead of Dropbox. Do you know about this?

    Best regards

Sure, we’ll keep you updated with any progress.

I was wondering if the problem would be the same if I was using Google Drive for the MP3 instead of Dropbox.

I just tested uploading an .mp3 file to Google Drive but the shareable link doesn’t include an audio file extension so it isn’t recognised by the shortcode. It seems Google are trying to block streaming playback I’m afraid.
