Author must already have wordpress.com account?

This is probably very basic, but it’s so basic I can’t find anything about it in the help system. Is it the case that a new Author must first of all get a wordpress.com account? If so, how does he/she do that? When I got an account it was assumed I would have a site…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Yes, I just tried to get an account (pretending I was a new Author), and it keeps assuming I want to create a site. This is very confusing to people that I am inviting to be Authors! Advice?

Here’s what I did: I went to wordpress.com, clicked Login, then clicked Register, the next screen said Step 1 of 5 Create your site today! Enter sitename and continue. Now tell me what I did wrong, or how to make an account without creating a site! Eleanor

    Hi Eleanor,

The invitation email includes a link that your new authors can use to set up a WordPress.com account without creating their own site. Then, they can accept the invitation to be added to your site.

They can also use this direct link to create just a username:

    https://wordpress.com/start

The link in the email apparently did not lead them to a place where they could set up an account. I’ll send them this link https://wordpress.com/start and see if it works — it did work for me in a little test, so thanks! I also note that the invite email does not tell them that they need an account. I saw a reproduction of the email on the web somewhere that told them to get an account before clicking the link, but the current version does not say that. I’ll have to be careful to include that in my invitation text. Seems that this procedure has changed lately. Also, there is nothing in the help pages on this problem! It is as though we assume that all Authors already have WordPress accounts.

    Hi Eleanor,

If you send the invitation to an email address that already has a WordPress.com account associated with it, it won’t include the message about creating a new account. If the person you invited has an account but doesn’t remember their account details, they can reset their password by entering their email address here:

Hmm, that’s an interesting possibility. I see that my welcome letter will have to be more complicated. If they have an old account that they have totally forgotten about, then they will be VERY confused by this behavior. And there’s no way that I can check this for them, apparently. I’ve written to my first tester about this, and we’ll see what happens.

    Hi Eleanor,

If you’d like to simplify the welcome letter, you can let them know that they can contact help@wordpress.com if they have any trouble accepting the invitation. That way our team can help them through the process of creating an account (if they don’t have one) or logging in to their existing account (if they do have one) and getting added to the site.

I’m glad to know about this email help service — I didn’t see this option mentioned anywhere on the website. I understood that if I am a non-paying customer, I could only use the Forum. And people who aren’t used to working on the Internet may not realize that getting help sometimes takes a day or more.
