Auto-Generate a Table of Contents

I added a request for a way to auto-generate a Table of Contents for longer posts and pages…possibly using title tags a little over a year ago.

Since no one can post to that anymore and the new Gutenberg platform will be coming out soon I thought this might be the perfect time to request this feature once more. I’ve noticed that many of the WordPress.com support articles utilize a Table of Contents so it’s apparent that their value is recognized. It also seems like a relatively simple feature to create.
Our only alternative curently is to manually create a ToC using jumplinks. But the WordPress support information regarding the procedure to do this isn’t consistent, making the whole process cumbersome and problematic. So much so that I wrote a post about how to do it for me to refer to whenever I need to use a jumplink you will find here.
Jumplinks just aren’t particularly useful for Table of Content purposes because the number of entries generally required makes their use ‘time prohibitive.’ Thus my request once again for a more automatic method….please!

Your original feature request was added to our internal tracker, but that does not mean the feature will be added.
Our developers prioritise what gets worked on based on several factors, including which features fit best with our goals as a company and how many people request it, and there has only been a handful of requests for this particular feature, so it’s unlikely anyone will work on it soon. Opening new idea threads are not going to change that.
