Auto-Renew Refund

I received an email from WordPress this morning telling me my site [that I’ve never actually used] has been auto renewed. I was unaware that I had this feature set and have tried to cancel my account immediately and get a refund. I see that Auto-Renews are non-refundable now but I do not want the renewal and didn’t set it to auto-renew. This feels very underhand and the fact you have no time at all to cancel it once it’s auto-renewed is very unfair. I would like my $99 refunded, I’ve never used the site, I don’t want the site and I certainly don’t want to pay $99 for it but there is no-one to talk to about it. Please can you get back to me.

I have researched this and have found this consumer advice at: http://venturebeat.com/2011/04/18/ask-the-attorney-the-auto-renewal-conundrum/ about the laws of auto-renewal.

I didn’t opt in to your auto-renewal, this was done for me and you have given me no notice of this auto-renewal in advance.

You are required to provide acknowledgement of automatic renewal – Many states require that you provide an acknowledgment after the purchase of an offer with an automatic renewal that also includes the cancellation policy. This should be transmitted in a way that it may be retained by the consumer.

Also, you must actually allow the consumer to cancel. Some states even have notice provisions that require the company to provide telephone support for cancellation. Although you have allowed me to cancel, you have taken my money without notice or warning and given me no means to get it back.

You must give ample notice – One of the most important things you can do when you have an automatic renewal on your website is give the consumer ample notice of the renewal. In some jurisdictions, that can be as much as 180 days. But in general, you should be giving at least 30 days notice to your customers before processing the auto-renewal.

I had no warning at all. I simply received an email at 1.42 in the morning! – telling me you’d auto-renewed my payment and despite my trying to cancel it within hours of waking and receiving your email, I was too late.

    This is completely unfair.

    Hi there,

Please note that this was made aware to you at purchase. There’s an automatic renewal unless you opt out: 1) in section 3 of our Terms of Service, and 2) the Store checkout screen (before you click Purchase).

Also, you could have disabled the auto-renewal at any time by going to Store > My Upgrades in your Dashboard.

We send out numerous emails starting months in advance to the email on your account. Please check your spam/junk folder as your email client may have placed it there. Also, if you log into your Dashboard it would have been seen at the top in red.

But no worries, I have provided you a full refund and removed all the upgrades from your account as requested. Please note that it may take up to a week for the refund to show up in your bank account.

Let me know if you have any questions with this!
