Auto-size Images Not Working
-
When I add a picture to a post, I typically choose ‘medium’ for the photo size and allow the auto-format do its thing. Of late, however, it doesn’t work. It looks correct on the page prior to publishing. But, once the page is published, the image reverts to its original size. I have to re-edit the post and type in 300 for width in order for it to appear as it used to look by selecting ‘medium.’
Here’s one example: https://oldgreycat.blog/2023/08/13/first-impressions-birdsongs-of-the-american-west-by-birds-of-play/
Here’s another: https://oldgreycat.blog/2023/08/06/first-impressions-last-rays-of-a-dying-sun-by-rain-parade/
Odder yet, as in the above examples, the pictures appeared correctly when the pages were published. I always check in two different browsers and often on two separate computers (one Mac, one Windows).
Any ideas of what’s going on? Is this on WordPress’s side? Or must I manually add the specific size for all images?
Thanks in advance.

Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out and providing the examples.
To check, when adding the 300 – was this added manually, so that the image source would be: https://oldgreycat.files.wordpress.com/2023/08/rain_parade_fr.jpeg?w=300 ?
The reason why I ask is because, I suspect this may not have been picked up by the sites styling.
I removed the 300px, and added the sizing in as seen below, and it looks to have the desired effect:

Also, are you able to detail where you selected the medium resolution option when creating the post please? I wonder if there’s something that can be improved.
Many thanks in advance!

Thanks for your help.
I initially set up that page similar to almost every other –

For years, the end result looks just as it did in the editing/preview pane. Now, as in the case I just now discovered, the image is no longer “medium” but large.
First Impressions: Riders of the Canyon by Riders of the Canyon
Once I stumbled upon this image issue, I did manually add 300 to the width (allowing height to remain auto) to images on about a dozen pages.
Folks viewing via a web browser won’t notice much of an issue with the formatting, as the image appears above the first paragraph. But anyone viewing via their phone will have an unpleasant experience – the image takes up the bulk of the screen and only a small slice of print appears on the right.
What’s annoying to me is that it once worked as intended. It’s almost as if someone removed “medium = 300 x 300” from the underlying code.

Hey there @oldgreycat, I’ve spotted a bug on this issue and filed your report to the case.
Your workaround is good, or you can use this CSS snippet for now. Your site is on Premium, so you can add this under Appearance > Additional CSS:
/* Temporarily resize images */ .size-medium { width: 300px; } .size-thumbnail { width: 150px; }Note this, and your workaround, only resize a full-sized image on the screen, so we’ll still be working on a fix, but that should help for now. Cheers!

You bet. We’ll update when we’ve got more info. It might be a bit since this seems to only affect some sites and we haven’t spotted the underlying cause, but we’ll keep at it.
