Automatic Categories

Every time I sign on, I notice that an automatic category has been added to my list of categories, and it is being assigned some random number. So far I have just been going in and deleting them. Is there anyway I can stop this?

This happens when you have deleted the “default” category and not set a different “default” category under options > writing. First step is to click on that category in your category widget and make sure no posts are assigned to it. If they are, open them and assign a different category, and deselect the numbered category. The go to options > writing and choose a different default category and click “update options.” The go to manage categories and delete the numbered category. In my experience, it will now not come back.
