Automatic Redirection to New URL
-
I have moved my old blog with wordpress.com to be hosted with my website (or, self hosted, as a subdomain).
I am interested can I set-up an AUTOMATTIC REDIRECTION to new URL, because I see people trying to find my blog (I needed some time in the meantime for set-up it at new URL with some new features etc.)
I have posted new URL at the page with old URL which I left only for that purpose, but not sure if could be as efficient as redirection.
Please help me to resolve this.
Thank you in advance.

You’re right that a redirection would be more efficient, but it’s not possible so what you’ve done is the solution.
Have you made private or deleted the other posts so search engines won’t find duplicate content?

I have deleted all original posts from my previous wordpress.com URL, after I transfered them to my new self hosted blog URL.So, all my old posts are now a new address. I left just one page of previous blog with the new URL address, but it seems no one is visiting it anymore, even I saw a lott of clicks and searches for my posts since I have moved blog. Maybe it is my mistake I did not tell the people immediatelly about moving, but I needed time to establish new blog with new design and features. So that was a reason.
I have also remember when I decided to move blog I was asked from wordpress software “why and WHERE i am moving my blog”? I did not answer because of above told reasons. I thought it won’t be a problem later for people to find me, once I establish new blog and tell them about new address.
It turned out, however it was mistake.
Also, I really do not understand why would automatic redirection should be such a problem to establish, from software making standpoint?
I saw this thing many times in use from the side of different websites: (“…please wait, you’ll be redirected for a few seconds”, or “we’ve moved, please go to our new URL…”) etc.
Why wordpress developers can’t do such a small but helpful feature for their users?

I don’t think it’s in their interest. A quick forum search would show that the only way to get an automatic redirect is to use the domain name upgrade. After 60 days you can move it and then there’s no interruption; otherwise, you have to do it the long way. WordPress.com doesn’t free up WP.com URLs for any reason of which I am aware, including redirection.

I don’t know why it is; you’d have to ask staff. I suspect — and this is just a guess — the fact that it’s a multi-user platform has something to do with it, but I really don’t know.
It will take the search engines a wee bit of time to catch up with your new url. You can help that along by using Google’s webmaster tools to verify your site, if you haven’t already, and to create a sitemap.
