automatic update failed

  According to my plugins my WordPress is up to date. This is the second time the following is at the top of all pages in dashboard: ‘An automated WordPress update failed to complete – please attempt the update again now’. Shortly after the first time, the site suffered a malware attack and the site shutdown. SiteSafe (purchased) with our server WHC cleaned up the mess. Anyone familiar with this?
