automatic upgrade failure, CHMOD rights, any guide for all?

    1): automatic upgrade failure:
    Trying to upgrade my blogs by automatically upgrade, I always get the message: Could not copy file.: x y z, (every time another file), Installation Failed!
    2): CHMOD rights:
    My provider then asks me: Have you controled your CHMOD rights?
    Questions: What are CHMOD? What it’s rights? Any guide? Where can I find them? How use them? etc. …
    3): My blogs have been created in 2005 by a friend suddently deceased. Could be he used already CHMOD.
    How can I find the trace of all his work on WordPress? I learn now all since the beginning. Any guide?
