automatically activating Photon caused issues
-
When I updated Jetpack on a self-hosted site the image on the homepage stopped displaying at full width and became a thumbnail and there was an error message at the top indicating it had to do with photon (see screen capture): http://awesomescreenshot.com/001psgvd9
I was smart enough to figure it out and simply deactivated Photon. HOWEVER… I question the premise that “each feature of Jetpack is already activated.” is a good idea. Why not let us activate things ourselves. Having the update add something already activated is what caused this issue. I manage nearly 40 WP sites. I don’t want to have to go into every one of them to turn OFF something I never turned on!
Thank you.

Thanks for your feedback and the error report.
I’m sorry the Photon module caused this problem. I’ve passed along the screenshot to the Jetpack developers so they can take a look at the error message. I’ll keep you posted here.
The feedback about activating new modules is very appreciated. I’ve brought it to the developers as well.

I just wanted to update you and let you know that our developers are looking into the Photon bug and appreciate the screenshot.
Photon should not have auto-activated itself – it normally requires manual activation. Thanks for letting us know.

Thanks for your attention to this. Just so you know… an online Dev group I participate in often says they won’t have anything to do with JetPack because it ALWAYS auto-activates things! I’ve not had this complaint until now. But it’s something that is keeping some people from using JP. Thank you.

Another site looking unprofessional due to Photon’s automatic activation. I do hope the next release of JetPack stops this total invasive and unacceptable behavior! Look at the mess it made here:

Thanks for the screenshot. Photon should definitely not be auto-activating and I’ve passed this along to the developers for further investigation after the holidays. Thanks for your patience.

Hi Sheila, would it be possible to send along a screenshot of the Jetpack dashboard on one of these sites, so we can take a look at exactly which modules are active when you’re seeing this error? We have not been able to replicate Photon auto-activating so it may be another module that’s at fault. If we could take a look at a screenshot which shows all the “cards” for both active and inactive modules on a site where you’re experiencing this issue, it would be very useful. Thanks a lot for your help.

You caught me as I leave my computer for 3 weeks! Here are a couple of screen captures:

http://awesomescreenshot.com/054riik14This is just a headsup… I should open a new ticket but as I said I’m leaving town so won’t be able to do much on the road. We’ve just discovered that Jetpack now conflicts with our membership plug-in, Digital Access Pass. When we turn off JP it works fine. I don’t think it’s just Photon in this case though. I had it turned off and the problem persisted. It’s really a bummer.

Thanks so much for the screenshots, I’ll pass them along to the Jetpack developers.
I’m also sorry to hear about the compatibility issue with Digital Access Pass. Could you let me know more about what the specific problem is? Is there an error message? If you turn off all the modules and then reactivate them one by one you might find the culprit – feel free to let me know.
Have a lovely trip and I’ll continue to keep you posted here.

Hi there – I had a closer look at the screenshots and they both show that Photon is not active. We were hoping to get a screenshot from a site where you thought Photon was auto-activating itself, since that hasn’t been something we’ve been able to replicate. If you come across another site where that seems to be happening, if you wouldn’t mind taking another screenshot right away, before you change any modules, we’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

Those were 2 sites that had the problem. Nothing changed except reactivating Photon. Best I can offer at this time.

Thanks again for the screenshots and information. The Jetpack developers have explained that even if the Photon module isn’t independently active, it is used behind-the-scenes for other image-related modules, such as tiled galleries.
The Photon error message you originally reported should be fixed as of Jetpack version 2.1, which was released last week.
Please let us know if you have any further problems – we appreciate your feedback.
