WordPress Plugin to Automatically add Copyright Message to your RSS / ATOM Feeds – Feed Copyrighter Plugin
Due to the increase in sploggers and blog scrapers I would like to see the feed copyright notice plug-in available at wordpress.org installed on the wordpress.com wp-MU blogging platform.

I do hope you’ve sent in feedback and bugged, I mean asked Mark about it, right? ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

I was just having a spot of tea before doing so. :)
    Edit: Done

I know that bumping your own post is bad form but I’m surprised that no other bloggers have weighed in on this idea. I’m aware that the copyright notice will not prevent blog scraping. What it will do though is document the fact that the blogger is exercising copyright over their material.

What I have done to deter scrapers and sploggers on my blogs is
    (1) removed the Creative Commons licenses
    (2) inserted Copyscape notices http://www.copyscape.com/
and now I’d like my feeds to automatically display the copyright notice too.

    What do others think?

Check out this thread TT for some ideas on this issue.

Hmm, I wonder why that thread looks familiar….

Sad part is, I never made it past what Handy had to say on that topic and then BAM……drmike threads! lol

Abuse is one of my “buttons” when it comes to the net. I’m not kidding when I state I block over a million connections a day from my boxes. Rather sad actually…..

    @ trent and drmike
Do these comments from you two mean that
    (1) you do support the idea of placing copyright notices on feeds, or that
    (2) you don’t support the idea because you think doing so would be ineffective?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am pretty much impartial to the idea actually, but wanted to show you what people with ideas thought ;)

I was engaged. I’m not allowed to have my own opinion. :)

Gentlemen – I have marked this thread “resolved”.

I forgot to say that Mark has responded:
We will look into it, but the fact is that those sites will not stop. They are breaking terms already and they know it. Their webhosts don’t care either. Copyright can be exerted with no notice.

  • Unknown's avatar

Agreed. If they gave a rat’s you know what about copyright, they wouldn’t be doing it in the first place.

That’s why I say complain to the host first as they may or may not know what is occuring.

Of course if the host is named somethign like rsskings like one of the site’s we’ve discussed here, I’m pretty sure that they’re not going to care either and the datacenter should be contacted.

It’s indeed a depressing state of affairs. Sadly, the internet is full of “anything goes” opportunists who lack integrity and who will apparently do anything to earn pennies from adsenseless.

Can someone teach me how to use copyspace as timethief has suggested above to include in a widget to serve notice to people seeking to steal my material?

I entered in my url on copyspace and received these 2 responses. Are they being nefarious with Second Chance to Lives material?

    @secondchancetolive

I’m neither qualified nor inclined to try and provide you with the frequent support you seem to require regarding this issue. I’m sorry if that sounds harsh to you but, the bottom line for you is the same as it is for all bloggers — once you publish your material it’s out there and if you believe it’s being blog scraped and want to do something about it then, that’s your judgment call to make and no one else’s. If you cannot make these calls on your own then I would suggest that you hire help.

Lorelle has written extensively on this subject and produced many helpful blog posts to guide other bloggers when making this call. Here’s a link that will lead you to all her posts on the subject http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2006/08/12/how-do-you-know-if-a-blog-has-integrity/

WONDERFUL idea. It’s funny because the blog is a non-profit casual thing that I do and I don’t think much about copyright. Yet, I work as a medical writer/editor by day and copyright is a big part of what I do (agreements..etc).

Timethief, per your infomation I have done alot of reading previously and I was not able to extract what I needed. Per your information I am a traumatic brain injury survivor who is on disability and I have a learning disability so give me a break. If you do not want to answer or respond to what I ask in the forums, that is your choice. Someone else may have the compassion and empathy to help me understand. I am being direct with you as you have been direct with me. Thank you for your time.

This is my thread and the topic is support for the feed copyright notice plug-in available at wordpress.org to be installed on the wordpress.com wp-MU blogging platform. In essence, you have hijacked my thread.

FWIW you are speaking to a person who is likewise disabled and perhaps living with far more serious limitations than you seem to have. Setting that aside, you quoted my post above so I answered you.

The bottom line here is that it’s IMO unrealistic to expect that others will make judgment calls for you on this same issue week after week. Up until now raincoaster has been doing this for you and perhaps she will choose to continue to do so but, please don’t forget that you posted into my thread and you quoted my post above so that is the reason why I answered you.
