Automatically citing Creative Commons images

    Hi —

    I would like to use images from Flickr in my posts but be a good net citizen and obey the appropriate Creative Commons rules associated with the image. Is there a way to do this automatically on WordPress.com? For example, if I embed an image that points to Flickr, automatically note that attribution is required by the CC license and add that as a caption or hover text on the image.

    If you are using the code provided by Flickr under the “Grab the HTML/BBCode”, then you are already fulfilling Flickr’s requirements as the original image will link back to the Flickr member’s image. If you wish to include attribution, you can simply add “Photo by XXX and released under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 License” or whatever that license may be.

    Hi Jennifer —

    Thanks for the reply. No I am not using the code from Flickr directly, I’m using the WordPress editor to create those posts and then clicking the little image icon to add stuff (from the web if necessary).

    I guess I was hoping for something a little more integrated, and that might work with other sites as well (Google Photos, SmugMug, etc).

    It’s commendable that you are giving credit/attribution to the author by linking back to their photo, but it sounds like you might be hotlinking images, which IMO is never a good idea.

    Besides the ethical considerations (bandwidth theft, etc.), you’re giving control over the content you display on your site to someone else. If their site goes down, your site is affected. Also, by way of example, there was a recent thread on the board where a hotlinked image a WP.com member had put in a widget was repurposed in a way he didn’t expect. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/unwanted-stop-sopa-banner-on-my-blog?replies=20
