Automatically display the first “X” characters in the Post loop

  I was hoping someone could help me. I want to have the “Post Loop” only show the first few lines of a post.

  If at all possible I don’t want to have to remember to type “MORE” on each post and I don’t want a funky URL that I’ve seen happen. Right now My Urls are something like: http://jaredheinrichs.com/This-Is-the-Name-Of-The-Post.html

  I notice after using the “more” tag my urls look like : http://jaredheinrichs.com/info-on-shaws-email-settings-limits.html#more-886 when you click on “Read the rest of this entry”

  Is there any way of getting rid of the more-866?
