Automatically subscribe to comment replies

I have a small private blog that I used to self-host on wordpress.org. I used a plug-in called “Subscribe to comments reloaded” and I had it set where everyone received notice of follow-up comments automatically. For financial reasons, I moved to wordpress.com and now everyone has to check the box on each comment to receive notice of follow-up comments. Is there any way to change this? I can understand why this wouldn’t be a good idea for all blogs, but for my small, private blog, people assume when they are signing up as members of my blog that they will get notices of new posts and new comments. Thank you.

During the brief time frame in which the default was changed to automatic subscription to all comments on every post we commented on the ccommunity here went WILD! We were peeved right off by the unwanted deluge of comments in our email that we protested loudly and Staff reversed their decision – thank GOB for that. No you cannot change this and flood your comments with unwanted comments. They choose whether or not to subscribe.

Also note that there is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install any plugins.

P.S. As temporary measure you could place a text widget at the top of the sidebar instructing your followers how to subscribe to post comments.

Thanks. Maybe I will try that. I put an email subscription box there, and most of my members didn’t notice it. I had to email them personally and I still have two that haven’t figured out how to do it.

I want to clarify something. I found where people can change their settings to subscribe to all comments. I agree that this should not be automatic.
What I wanted was where they could automatically be notified of replies to THEIR comment without having to remember to check a box on every post they comment on. So far, I’m loving using wordpress.com, but this is one feature I miss from my wordpress.org blog.
