Automatically Treat Comments Posts As If They Were Wrapped In Tags

    Hi,

I need a way so that comments entered on my site do not suffer from any automatic markup, code recognition, etc. Basically so that whatever they type remains just as it is.

Most of the Posts I make, and Comments I receive, contain Excel formulas.

At the moment, for my own Posts I have managed to stop the editor automatically changing occurrences of e.g. <, >, “”, etc. by wrapping it in tags.

But I am not able to do this for other people's Comments, so at the moment I am having to spend several minutes editing every single one. And I don't really want to have to tell readers of my blog that they should have to add such tags every time they want to post a Comment.

I am not receiving that many comments yet as I've only just started, though if things get quite busy then this could become a real issue.

Is there a way I can somehow automate/force the Comment editor to do this for me? Or is there perhaps another way so that Excel formulas for example remain precisely as they are when posted as Comments and do not have certain characters, e.g. < recognised as some sort of instruction to the editor?

    Many thanks

    Hi there,

I’m afraid that there isn’t any way to automatically wrap your comments in any tags. As you suggested, you can change your Comment note to suggest that commenters do so (you can do this in your Settings >> Discussion at the bottom of the page).

You may also want to consider looking in to WordPress.org as a solution. I’m not personally aware of one, but there may be a way to modify your contact form there to automatically include any tag during any input that it receives.

Ok. Many thanks for your response.

And there’s not perhaps a different Theme that I can switch to which at least will have as a default that all Comment text which is entered is left completely as it is, i.e. no characters within it are treated as HTML entities?

If not, I guess for the time being I’ll have to bear the brunt of the work myself and edit all comments before posting.

    Regards

I’m afraid not. Commenting is a function of WordPress.com rather than the theme, so changing themes wouldn’t really change anything to do with the input of the text.

    Sorry!

Ok. Thanks a lot for your help.
