Automattic,

I’m using your lovely, clean Forever theme on WordPress.com and am having two problems: 1) How do I get rid of the Sidebar?; 2) Is there any way to get the Archives/Posts to run from earliest to latest, not the other way round, as is the default?
    Thanks.

Do you have the Custom Design upgrade? If so, 1) is possible. I don’t think 2) is possible at all unless you replace the Archives page or widget with a regular page or text widget and write it by hand.

Thanks. No, I don’t have the custom upgrade. I’ll investigate that, though, if I can’t list the posts in reverse, then I’ll have to look elsewhere. I read somewhere that it can be done, but that might be in the full WordPress.org software, which I don’t want to do. Anyone know a theme that allows this?

The default display of Archives/Categories pages on a WPcom site is from most recent post to earliest post.

You can however, as rain mentioned, create your own Archives page using the Archives shortcode. http://en.support.wordpress.com/archives-shortcode/ There are quite a number of parameters that you can add to the shortcode to get it to display how you want, including sort order from earliest to latest. Then you can link to that Archive Page in your site navigation using a Custom Menu or widget. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

As to your question about themes, you can learn more about setting up Forever from the theme’s Showcase page: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/forever/ It does have a full-width template, but that is only available on Pages, not the Posts page.

There are a number of themes that have no sidebar at all. Have a look here: https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/one-column/ Maybe one of them is better suited to your needs.

    Thanks All,
I’ve gone Premium, got rid of the Sidebar via Page Attributes, and am investigating the reverse order problem as suggested above (though CSS is Another Country to me…). In the Customise menu, when you click on CSS you get a Welcome message, but no sign of the page’s CSS. Where is it?

I have an additional problem. I have the Site Title, which was repeated in the Menu (I’ve changed that to a plain Home), but I now have the Site Title and a strap-line repeated above the full page photo which is on my opening Static page. I can find nowhere that I can edit it. I’ve looked through all the various Customise menus as well as in the CSS/HTML areas. No trace. Where could it be hiding? I would, if possible, like to reformat it to be centred and have strap-line on a line of its own.

Thanks Jennifer and Rain – I’ve finally managed, with your help, to get the Blog looking as I want it to. Still need to find a way to get rid of that Sidebar on the Posts, so am researching other full-width template themes as you suggested. I’m a bit nervy, as the site is working well at the moment. All I need to figure out is how to use the dropdown menu code on my Posts page. I finally managed to get a drop-down menu on the page, but it isn’t all that obvious as it just has — in the box. Is there anywhere to change this to a name?

Sorry for the lateness. That is a seriously brilliant makeover!

I see you’ve gone with the post title list on your “archives” page and personally I like it better than the drop down list. I do imagine that it is possible to add a name to the Archive shortcode dropdown rather than having the — in the box, but I’m not certain if CSS can do this. That might be a question for the CSS Customization forum.

You could also add each of your post titles to the Custom Menu under the “The Story from…” link (which would create a drop down when you drag to indent the titles under that page), but I feel it would clutter up what you have going on right now. The current minimalist feel is quite compatible with how you have the site set up. Again, well done!

Thanks, Jennifer, I am really grateful. The new full-width template theme works really well (though I do miss the plain, clean white of Forever). Having said that, people have responded well to this version. The opening page background colour seems to work well with the extraordinary frontage of the Theatre.
Now all I have to do is keep writing.
I am thinking of numbering the posts to reinforce that it needs to be read from the start. Not sure, as it might clutter it up. I’ll give it a bash.
Once again, my gratitude is boundless.

An added question (sorry to be a nuisance): is there a way of adding a forum to the theme? I need people to be able to discuss various issues and the Comments section isn’t enough?

Sorry about the ? after ‘enough’…
