  can I use an autoresponder such as awebber or mailchimp, including the facility to embed their opt-in form on my blog?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  You cannot embed the forms. http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

  You can create a sign up page on MailChimp directly and simply link to it from your WordPress.com site. Here’s their instructions http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-to-add-a-mailchimp-signup-form-to-your-wordpress-blog

  The same applies to Aweber. what you can do is get the external page link from Aweber for subscribing and then you can link to it.
