AutoSave??

  • Unknown's avatar

Where is autosave? I can’t find my autosave anywhere. It’s not in my “bottom right hand corner” like it says it should be. There just doesn’t seem to be an auto save. I go off a post for 30 seconds and it’s gone.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Please excuse me for interjecting but I have been through this and I don’t want you to go crazy trying to locate post revisions that may not exist.

The classic editor retains 25 auto-saved post revisions but the new Beep Beep Boop editor does not. The post revision management system is not built into the new Beep Beep Boop editor, so saving the draft saves only the most recent version, but not previous versions.

Provided you did not create the post in the new Beep Beep Boop editor where it’s saved only on your browser, and is not auto-saved to the servers for your blog unless you click the save link once, you may be able to recover a lost post or page.

If you are using the new Beep Beep Boop editor please read this first:

Features that won’t be included in the new editor
    Post Revisions
    Copy a Post
    Link back to wp-admin
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-reinstate-the-option-of-choice-to-use-the-old-publishing-format/page/32?replies=942#post-2338964

If the post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Pages > Add New then you ought to be able to recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

See also if applicable > restoring from trash http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

To locate draft POSTS Dashboard > Posts > All Post > Drafts
    http://silverride.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=draft&post_type=post

To locate draft PAGES Dashboard > Pages> All Pages > Drafts
    http://silverride.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=draft&post_type=page

(If you are referring to a Page then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-revisions/)

If you cannot locate a revision or restore from Trash then the content has been lost and cannot be recovered.

    I recommend:

    1. Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New
If you have cookies enabled on your browser your preference will be saved unless or until your clear your cookies, and it will take you to the classic editor automatically every time you create a new post via the drop-down menu in the black admin bar or edit a post via the edit button on the blog itself.

You cannot deactivate the new Beep Beep Boop editor but you do not have to use it. For locating the ways and means of accessing the legacy or classic pages for creating posts, editing posts, and viewing stats see here > Navigating the Classic WordPress.COM interface http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2015/04/05/navigating-the-classic-wordpress-com-interface/

    2. Immediately after creating a post and entering a title click the save draft link. Thereafter, “click save draft” frequently.

    3. Always allow pages to fully load before clicking any other links.

    4. Never leave a post or page open for content creation or editing and walk away from it, or open another tab in the same blog and work on something else while it is still open. Save it properly and return to edit it later.

    5. Use an offline blog editor so you have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

Did you know that both editors try to save a copy of the latest work in the browser?

A good way to check is to go to https://wordpress.com/post with the same browser and see if it offers to restore a post. If a restore button appears, that means a local copy was saved in your browser and you may be able to recover it.

Did you know that both editors try to save a copy of the latest work in the browser?

Yes, I know that. It’s not good enough for me.

    @designsimply
I’ll add those two sentences into my copy and paste answer in the future, as new bloggers are now being compelled to use the latest buggy iteration of the feature deficient Beep Beep Boop editor, because Staff have made sure that they are unaware that we have a classic editor.

Cool, it might help people to check https://wordpress.com/post first because if they were using the new editor then that is the first best chance for recovering content.

I’m starting to keep track of the editor more closely to help out other happiness engineers who have been doing a great job of rounding up issues so far (there were a lot in the beginning!, many updates and fixes have already been made, and more are on the way). Specifically, I will be trying to identify the biggest pain points first. Lost content is one of them.

If you had to pick one top most important issue to fix in the editor right now, what would it be?

    Agreed. :)

Restoration of the link to the classic editor in the new Beep Beep Boop editor!

Note: I had to restrain myself from SHOUTING! that.

The classic editor is the only one I use. I will never use a tablet or mobile to blog with. I refuse to be co-opted into using a lame, feature deficient, buggy editor that I hated after trying it out, so I won’t be helping with the development of it, and have nothing additional to suggest.

The support docs are being crippled by pagination and the injection of a ridiculous number of links and bloggers I know are ANGRY like I am about the changes there. See here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/do-we-really-need-pagination-in-support-docs?replies=6#post-2371928

I’m am still helping ANGRY bloggers to move off this platform and feeling very sad about it. I have helped several move to Blogger where they are happy (oh, the irony). I have 4 more moves to self hosting to make by the end of the month, when May is a concert month and I need to be practicing my singing instead.

If WordPress.com is going to become a microblogging platform like Tumblr catering to tablet and mobile users then I want the TPTB here to say so. This is a the second year of unannounced, unwanted and unwelcome inconveniences to our blogging re; UI changes being passed of as improving our blogging experience – as if! The confidence we had based on being able to log-in and blog with enjoyment and ease, and without experiencing surprises that are unexpected obstacles to use have stretched patience to the breaking point, and the affection we once had for this platform are history for many of us. We no longer recommend blogging here to our friends. :(

    I hate hearing that!

I know it’s frustrating to transition. I appreciate the feedback and will do my best to put the top issues forward—which is part a new focus/role for me.

I hate it too. Over the course of 9 years I have helped many bloggers set up here and they were happy but now they ANGRY. This an extremely painful situation for me. When I survived last summer, celebrated my birthday and got my 1dt pension cheque I made a plan to surface from the WordPress.com rabbit hole and take up again all the things I gave up to create time to blog in. My plan is to retire and blog without obligation ie. to publish only when I have something worth sharing. However, now almost every one of my people have either had me move their content to Blogger or to self-hosting and it amazes them that I’m still a fan girl. Yes, I am confident that Staff will eventually produce an editor that rivals the classic editor, but that day is not in sight, and the bloggers I helped do not want to hang in there like I’m doing. :(

Hopefully it’s closer than you think. :)

If you give the editor more of a chance, it might grow on you.
