Autosave feature is updating far more often then "every two minutes"
-
Hello,
I’ve had a blog on WordPress for several years now but lately I find that when I’m writing a blog post that it automatically updates about every minute or less (the “autosave” info on your site–at this link: http://en.support.wordpress.com/autosave/–states that it automatically updates every 2 minutes. Lately (over the course of the past year off and on and now it’s every time I write a post) the “autosave” feature is updating as frequently as every 30 seconds up to every minute. For example, the other day when I wrote a post it updated almost 200 times (e.g, I got almost 200 “update” emails) in the short time I was writing the post. For example, within a 30-minute period of time (give or take a few minutes), the “autosave” feature updated my post (still unpublished at that point) 61 times. 61 times!!! I think that perhaps the feature has gone a bit haywire and was wondering if you could check on it for me to see why my “autosave” is saving far more often then “every two minutes” as I found to be the statement on your “autosave” page. If it can’t be fixed, I understand. I just delete the update emails anyway, and I’ve learned to ignore them while I’m writing the post. But I’ve never had this big of a problem before and it started about a year ago and was “off and on” until recently when every single time I write a blog post now it updates every 30 seconds to one minute. Anyway, thanks for your help. You guys do an awesome job with WordPress.com and keep up the great work!!! Thanks in advance. ~Sara Devine

Wow, what a fast response! I’m using Google Chrome and I just uninstalled and reinstalled it a few days ago (I had a malware issues but had been told to uninstall and reinstall Chrome so I did that, and also downloaded the free version of MalwareBytes. Also, my IE browser is the latest edition and recently updated, too, but I don’t use it much when I’m writing blog posts. I’ve been on WordPress since July 2010 (deleted most of my first posts written back then in April 2011 and then started the blog back up again in July 2011 and it’s just taken off since then–I have 283 blog posts on it now). I have to admit I’ve had a few hacker issues and I had to take my laptop in and have it looked at about a year ago (had several “holes” in my firewall where folks were getting in and they closed them up and I keep on eye on it now).
I haven’t been using the secure WordPress site (https://wordpress.com) and will use it the next time I write a post to see if that helps. I’ve been writing my posts through http://wordpress.com. I’ve never had an issue like this one (the constant updating) until it started about a year ago when I had the hacker issues. It’s happened off and on again after the “holes” in my firewall were closed off so I think perhaps someone might still be able to get into my laptop or at least my WordPress account (and yes, I’ve changed my password).
Oh yes, my Java and Flash are both up-to-date (just frequently, too). And I clear the cache and cookies frequently (in fact, I think I have Chrome set to delete on exit–same with IE but like I said I rarely use that when writing blog posts–I’ll check to make sure). Maybe I’ll try using IE the next time I write a post to see if all of the frequent updates (too frequent, I mean, and not the “normal” amount) keep happening there. I have found over time that Chrome seems to have more security issues than IE does. That might be how a hacker is getting into my WordPress account if that is, indeed, the issue.
I don’t receive any “error” reports but I do receive each and every email update from the automatic updater. Fortunately, since I use Gmail as my email account on WordPress, they all accumulate under the banner of one email (up to 61 individual email updates) and then it starts a new email which will cap out again at 61 email updates. It’s really ridiculous when I spend only 2 or 3 hours writing a blog post that I get around 200 updates while I’ve been writing it. And it happens every time I write a blog post now.
I think I’ll try writing the next post using “https” in Chrome and if that doesn’t work, I’ll try using IE again. I don’t mind IE but find when I post YouTube videos that I have to go into the actual html page to add it as it won’t configure right when I use the “visual” screen. I taught myself basic html years ago (late 90’s) and I’m so glad I did!!! Anyway, it’s a minor thing, really, but I’ve just always preferred Chrome when writing my blog posts.
Oh, I use the same laptop I’ve always used (purchased in May 2010) and I use a secure internet connection (my personal one through T-Mobile when traveling and a BrightHouse secure connection, too).
I really think the issue might be hacker related as it started around the time I found all the whole in my firewall a year ago. It’s almost like someone is on the same page I’m on when I’m writing it and hitting the update button. At times (when I had the holes in my firewall) they would erase stuff as I was writing it which is why I ended up at the computer shop in the first place (in May 2010). I’m of the mind that not all of them (hackers, I mean) got shut out when the holes were closed up. Can’t afford a new laptop as I’ve been unemployed for five years now (I’d love to update my technology but don’t have the $$$ to do it).
Anyway, thanks for your help and I’ll start using the more secure (https) when I write my new post. Thanks again for your quick response and very helpful tips!!! ~Sara Devine

Oops, I meant to say in the second to the last paragraph in my last comment that I ended up taking my laptop to the computer shop in May 2013 (I typed May 2010). The issues with the constant updating started back around March or April 2013 right after a new young tenant–a couple actually–moved in right below me. The tenant before them was an older man who was not computer literate at all and had not techy stuff. Anyway, that is when all the holes in my firewall started showing up. They moved out by September 2013 and some of my issues apparently moved out with them (I had other issues then just my WordPress issues when they lived there), but the constant updating stuff continued off and on until recently when it is now happening every time I write a blog post. I have now moved to another city and the updating issues have followed me, so I’m not sure what is causing it at this point in time. I know that hackers are not “location” bound and can come from anywhere (and I don’t know if it is a hacker–I just know it used to be). Anyway, that’s it for now. Like I said I’ll try using the https site for my next blog post. Thanks again!!! ~Sara

Hi again Sara,
I hope that using the https:// login will work for you. However, I have tagged this thread for Staff so please let us know how you make out. -
Will do, and thanks for all your help! I’ll let you know how or if it (using the https:// login) works the next time I write a post. I do love WordPress.com. It’s a great blog site and I’m very happy to have it as my “blog” home! ~Sara

Hi,
I just wanted to let you know I decided to do a “test” blog post (unpublished, of course) using Chrome and then using IE and logging in through the “https://” login and I still get all those “automatic updates” every minute or less and it sends me an email every time it automatically updates. Not sure I can fix this situation on my end, but I do appreciate the tips you gave me earlier today. Guess I’ll just have to live with it. It all began with a hacker over a year ago now so I can only assume that might still be part of the problem. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks again,
Sara

Hi sarasmusings,
It looks like you have the Email post setting turned on, so you receive email notifications for all changes:
https://sarasmusings.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=email_post_changes
Since you are the only user on this blog, I’d strongly recommend turning that off. :)

Hi Jackie–thanks for the tip. I just went in and turned off the “email changes to draft.” It’s when I’m writing the drafts that I get tons of email (every 30 seconds to 1 minute) while I’m writing the draft. This should at least stop that (I’ll be able to tell, of course, the next time I write a blog post). Anyway, thanks for letting me know about it! ~Sara

You shouldn’t receive any more emails from the autosave feature or when you make manual updates to posts. If you do, please let me know.
