Autosave Gets Stuck

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to report that the last four or five blogs I’ve written have had problems due to the autosave function getting stuck and leaving me unable to rescue or save what I’ve written and it has been consistently happening. I’ve been forced to cut and paste what I’ve written because if I leave the page, nothing gets saved and I’ve lost a lot of writing, that and trying to paste it back into place in the new editor has proven to be very messy and frustrating. I am certain that whatever is causing this isn’t on my end; I’ve checked everything from my Chrome browser to my Internet connection and can find no reason for the autosave function to get stuck. For my last blog, I switched over to the classic editor and expected to see what I’d written appear in the classic editor but, instead, I got a blank page with nothing in it; it wasn’t until I clicked the back button on my browser that I got some of what I’d already written and I suspect it was what managed to get saved before autosave got stuck and made do some stuff to save what I’d written and get it published.

What’s going on with this? I’d really like to know.

  • Hi there,

Can you please let me know which interface you’re using? The classic one (https://kdaddy23.wordpress.com/wp-admin/)? or https://wordpress.com/ ?

Well, the new editor is provided by default – and it’s the one that has been giving me fits with autosave getting stuck; noticeably, when I switch to the classic editor, I don’t see the autosave thing at all.

In the new editor, I can be typing along and because it flashes, I can see it. In the beginning of my typing, stuff gets saved – no problem. But as I continue to type, that’s when autosave just gets stuck and once it does, I’m pretty much hosed because there’s nothing I can do other than to cut out what I’ve typed and exit the editor. When I tried pasting my work into the classic editor, you can see the hypertext the new editor uses for returns and paragraphs which, of course, have to be removed – it’s a pain in the butt to have to clean up the stuff before it can be published via the classic editor.

I’m thinking the new editor isn’t supposed to work like that.

  • It definitely isn’t supposed to work that way, and I haven’t seen the problem as described myself. I wonder if it is something in the browser.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

Yeah, I did all of that before reporting it; my Chrome browser is up to date and there are no funky add-ons loaded and I even pinged WordPress.com to make sure there wasn’t any communication issues between my machine and the site itself like it was taking too long. I opened my blog in MS Edge and saw the same thing happen with a test blog I created, something I found odd since I rarely use Edge and it gets updated whenever Windows updates.

The computer gets cleaned regularly including all browser caches, cookies, etc., so I’m pretty certain this isn’t causing what I’m seeing, that and I’m not seeing any funky stuff using the browser for other sites.

Because I know how to, I even checked my router and even reset it (and made sure it had the current updates) for connectivity issues like high channel traffic, etc., and everything is the way it’s supposed to be so I’m really not understanding this and more so when I can replicate this on another computer.

I just needed to report this because I’ve seen it more than once over the last few days; I’ve checked everything I can check on my end right down to the computer itself but when I use the iOS app, I’m not seeing this at all so if you’re baffled, so am I. If nothing else, I’ll just use the classic editor for now since it’s not experiencing this issue.

  • Thanks, we’ll keep an eye out for that!

One more question, are you running any ad/tracker blockers either in the browsers or system-wide? If so, do you still have the problem with those switched off?

Nope, not running any of them and my antivirus/anti malware software isn’t – and hasn’t – caused any problems with WordPress before I started seeing this; I made sure that WordPress is whitelisted.

  • Excellent, thanks for clarifying! We’ll keep an eye out for this, and see if we can duplicate (and then of course fix) the problem.
