Autosave problem
-
Hi,
I’m not sure what can be done for the future, but here’s my scenario.
I will write/edit blog entries at work. I sometimes finish them at home.
Last night, when I got home, I noticed that some of what I’d written at work was missing. Weird. So I rewrote the missing material as best I could and then wrote more.
This morning, I got to work, the page where I had been editing the day before was still live in my browser. It autosaved simply by me going to that tab in my browser and overwrote what I’d written last night at home.
So, what I wrote last night is now gone. It’s like two steps forward and one back.
Is there some setting that I can change to prevent this?
Thanks,

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that Andrew. We do sometimes see issues along those lines if the same user has more than one editor window open to the same post — basically the two versions conflict with each other and sometimes the one with less content “wins.” And, since we only store so many auto saves, sometimes the revisions will be lost too (though it’s always worth checking revisions if you haven’t already.)
Saving a draft and closing the browser when you leave the computer is your best bet.
Otherwise, if you like leaving tabs open, one thing that might work for you is to go ahead and create a separate account for your work and home computers. That way, if one account or the other has the post open, you’ll get a warning saying someone else is editing it. You’ll also get an option to “take over” editing — which will kick the other editor out.
You would still need to be cautious about having multiple tabs open to the same post on the same computer, but that might help a bit with the work/home issue.
