Avatars for non-WordPress people
-
If a friend of mine regularly adds a comment to my blog, is there anyway that they can have an avatar next to their comments – or do they need to sign up to WordPress and set up the avator in their profile?

They have to get a WordPress.com username in order to get an avatar. That’s because the avatar is an image you upload via your profile page, and you can’t have a profile without a username. That said, your friend can get a username without an associated blog. In fact, the FAQ notes that this is possible: “You might have signed up for a username without a blog in order to post comments or contribute articles to someone else’s blog.” See:

No, like Vivian said, they can sign up for a Gravatar and that will work on WordPress.com and usually WordPress.org as well.
