AVI/MP3 uploading problems
-
When I start uploading AVI videos and MP3s today, the progress bar zips across to 100 percent in no time, then the “Crunching…” message is displayed for the rest of the upload. MP3s appear to have uploaded successfully, but an AVI stalled after a while. I’ve never seen this before; usually the progress bar creeps along and appears to reflect fairly accurately the upload progress of the files, which are up to 300 MB and often take two or three hours. What has changed? The only thing I’ve done since my last upload session is to upgrade my AVG antivirus. Thanks.

Yep. Have had VideoPress and space upgrade for some time. Plenty of space left for what I’m uploading today.

There’s nothing unusual in the filenames, is there? No punctuation or anything? Because that can cause a problem.
AVG has been known to cause problems sometimes with new upgrades. Try shutting it off while you’re doing that, but for safety’s sake DO NOT go to any other sites while you’re uploading. Maybe have dinner or something instead.

AVG is one possibility – I don’t know about it specifically, but some virus checkers scan outbound files and that can cause upload problems.
Your best bet is to follow this up with support staff directly because diagnosing it will probably require providing detailed information that you won’t want published on the forum.

Filenames look OK. After the initial problems, I tried an old AVI that I had uploaded a few weeks ago without incident and it does the same thing. I’ll turn off the AVG and give it another try. Just finished dinner but it only takes a few seconds to tell whether the progress bar is acting wierd. Thanks, RC.

I think we’re onto something. I turned off the LinkScanner component in AVG and tried uploading one of the same AVIs. It appeared to be acting normally again, taking a minute or so to go from 1 to 2 percent. The upload also cancelled immediately when I told it to, which it wouldn’t do before. This is version 9 of AVG Free, which has not been out very long. They’ve added this LinkScanner thing, and a browser toolbar for it. What’s the best way to alert other WP users of this?
BTW, I updated the AVG program as part of a weekend-from-hell during which I battled a rogue program called Malware Defense on my daughter’s laptop. It is a bear to remove. -
Well, posting in the forum is probably the best way, so thanks for letting us know. If you tell AVG (which has a good forum of its own) they may hopefully fix it.

Will do. At least I hope that was the problem. I’ll know in a couple of hours. Thanks all.
