avoiding anynomous users – posts
-
(In 11 years of website work I have always found forums the most helpful part of any new program or tool. I appreciate all the helpful people in this one!)
I had wordpress going as a test on a website a while ago, because that host had it installed on the server allowing it to run from the website.
When I set that test blog up, it seems that I was able to control who registered sucessfully.
This is an important part of the type of blog I want to do.
There are some incredibly negative local blogs that allow anyomous posts, and some of the most viceral flames are held in those posts. These are the people who also post information that is nonfactual and would take hours to refute.
I see by using the wordpress server for a blog, the registration process is done through wordpress, and the only way to control anyonmous flames is by moderating the posts. Is that true?
Is there any way for the blog owner-adminstrator to identify the poster or to require registration with that particular blog?
thanks

Anonymous folks should not be able to make Posts to your blog. If this is occuring, then that’s a security matter and needs to be addressed. I think we have a misunderstanding though.
As the admin, you have control over your blog. The only people who have access to the backend and are able to make posts are those you add in via the Users page of your backend.
If you’re thinking Comments where you say Posts up there, (and I think you are) you can do a couple of things. You can require your Commenters to be logged in before making a comment. This option is located on the Dashboard -> Options page under Membership. This is what I’ve finally done on my own blog simply because I got tired of folks asking for help in comments but giving me no way of contacting them. (Happens a lot) The only issue with that is that anyone with a wp.com would be able to leave a comment then. At least it wouldn’t be anonymous.
You can also take your blog completly private. You can see the FAQ on that here.
Hope this helps,

thanks –
and yes- the issue is comments.
As someone who had been very involved in posting maillist type groups identifying the forms of contribution is tough.
But what I am looking for is a way to make anyone who contributes via comment, required to register with the blog owner or administrator.
It seems that the only way a registration is done is with Wp – if we choose to use the myblog.wordpress.com format rather than a wordpress program installed on an independant web server.I was hoping there was some way to make people register with the blog itself….

If it was just a stand along blog, they would have to register with just the blog. Since this is a shared environment, all they need is an account here at wp.com if you have the Membership box checked.
One thing you can do is set the comments to be moderated first. That way you look over them first and OK them before they’re shown on your blog.
