Award

Hi,
I’ve been nominated for an award, along with 3 other people. This is the nominatin page: http://victoriouslyblog.com/2013/06/26/always-here-if-you-need-me/
I’m confused: do I need to wait for a winner to be picked, or are all 3 of us winners, and I should simply go ahead and post the award picture on my blog (along with saying the 3 things that make me happy and nominating 3 more people) and leave it at that?
Thank you!The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You simply go ahead an follow the instructions provided if you want to accept the award and keep the chain-letter like award meme going.
There are no WordPress.com sponsored awards. They are all blogger generated backlink meme schemes. A blog meme is a viral game where you generate links and relationships through asking other bloggers to participate. There are many blog awards and all are memes resembling chain letters designed to get backlinks under the guise of blog awards.

You’re welcome. Please be aware that backlinks to your pillar posts from posts published by other bloggers with authority in related blogs are valuable.
Backlinks gained by awards memes are not valuable at all. The lower the pagerank the site that sponsors the meme is the lower the value the link is.
New bloggers can get carried away with doing not much more that playing meme games and end up with reciprocal inks that lack value rather than building a collection of pillar posts that establish their authority by attracting valuable backlinks to their content.

On another hand, if your goal for blogging is to develop personal relationships with a few people who interest you, the ‘blog awards’ might be something of value to you. Several/many years ago they were very popular as a way to generate traffic to your site. As tt says, though, that concept is less useful today. If all the folks on the ‘award’ list are friends of yours then you can either gracefully thank them or you can participate.

Thanks. I’m not out to get rewards or generate a tonne of traffic – I blog because I want to blog.
I’m sorry but I don’t get all the “meme” and “pillar posts” language. Are you saying that if I continue the chain of the award I’m basically perpetuating an advertisement FOR the award (and its creator)? Would I be better off just ignoring it?
Thanks -
A meme is “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture

It’s nothing ‘official’ but more along the lines of a chain letter.Pillar posts are the main topics/themes you write about, and they should reinforce your blog’s purpose for existing. Read timethief’s links.
You can answer/do the steps of an award if you like. Mostly you will not reap SEO (search engine opimization) from them, but if you like and know the folks involved you might enjoy responding to them.
If you know and like the people, then you won’t be promoting any sort of advertising for anyone. You would just be responding to people you like.
My own policy is to ignore this sort of stuff. I try to respond to people individually. One person to another, as I would in real life. During my experience here on wp.com I’ve made some friends even with these memes. But the memes/awards are certainly not official. Responding to them won’t be harmful. They are, though, rather young and foolish, not usually useful. And as timethief points out, they do not help with SEO and stats.
