Bacground images issue

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

    I’m brand new to blogging and am a new WP customer. I posted a question about having difficulties with background images on my Spectrum theme a few days ago – both the WordPress stock background images AND using a custom background image:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/background-image-problems-bug?replies=1

    The topic has been closed, and yet no answers have been provided – not sure why, because I am still having issues! I have a paid account that is supposed to include email support, but I can’t find a way to email support directly on this issue – is there a way to get in contact with someone directly rather than waiting days and still not getting a resolution to the issue?

    From what I can tell, the issue does appear to be a bug within the Spectrum theme. I cleared my cache, tried using different browsers, and even popped onto a friend’s computer to make sure it wasn’t just an issue with my computer. What I DID find, in 2+ days of monkeying around trying to resolve the issue on my own since I had no contact from customer support, was that if I go into the customization screen and set the color palette to “default”, suddenly my theme magically accepts background images & they don’t go disappearing on me!

    While this does resolve the issue of my background images not “sticking” once I save them, it creates a whole new problem because now I cannot change my color palette for my blog’s name, links, post titles, etc. without it reverting back to my images suddenly disappearing again – it appears the color palette must remain on the “default” setting in order for background images to stay put.

    Understandably, this is a drag as I paid for the ability to customize in my upgrade and can’t see why I should have to choose between either having a background image OR having my color palette the way I want it to be. What I want to know is:

    1) Is support aware of this glitch & is there an ETA in terms of when it will be resolved?

    2) Since I have the CSS upgrade, is there a temporary work-around I can use by editing the CSS to change the colors in my site name, post titles, links, etc? I don’t know anything at all about editing code, but it seems to me there should be a fairly easy way to change the color values of each of these without too much drama. I don’t even know if this solution will work, but it might be worth trying so that I don’t have to sacrifice the background image for the ability to have a custom color palette or vice versa.

    Thank you for your time.

    Hi there,

    Your request via the Private Support forums was replied to on 3/4/14. You can read the reply here:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/private-support/customizing-spetrum-theme?replies=2

    That thread is still open. However, please keep all further correspondence here to prevent confusion and for the fastest response times.

    It looks like this is indeed a bug with the Spectrum theme. I have reported it to our theme developers, and I will let you know as soon as a fix is in place. In the meantime, for a temporary fix, you can use the following code within your Custom CSS:

    body.custom-background {
    	background-image: url('Source URL here');
    	background-repeat: repeat;
    	background-position: top left;
    	background-attachment: scroll;
    }

    Just navigate to Appearance -> Customize -> CSS and place the above code. You should be able to change the color schemes and still retain the background image. The “Source URL” can be found on the media page as shown here on the right-hand side of the screen:

    http://d.pr/i/P3Hj

    Let me know if you have any trouble with this workaround! I’ll keep you updated on the permanent fix.

    Those were two entirely different issues – my original question that you referenced had to do with the HEADER image disappearing, not the BACKGROUND image. Both are buggy though, so I guess it’s kind of similar…. The second part of that thread had to do with being unable to locate a WP stock background image that was previously available in the customization screen – it appears WP rotates their stock of available background images – and it’s also completely unrelated to the issue I am having now.

    I will try the suggested fix when I have a moment, but please be aware these were all SEPERATE issues that shouldn’t be condensed into one trouble ticket. I do appreciate being notified when there is a permanent fix – a forum thread I stumbled upon today seemed to indicate this has been an known, ongoing issue for months. That thread dated back to November of 2013.

    Also, is there a direct email for support? Because if it’s automatically assumed that every support thread I start is all about the same issue (as in this case) and then support staff doesn’t reply because of this, I have no other way to get answers and was under the impression my paid upgrade included email support.

    Please, I truly do understand that you guys might be short-staffed and/or spread thin, but please take the time to read each ticket thoroughly. I waited days for a reply that no one was going to give me because they read it quickly & thought it had already been answered.
    On my end, I thought I did a fairly decent job of being articulate about what each problem was in order to avoid confusion. If you’re not sure if someone’s issue has already been resolved, isn’t it just easier to ask than write it off and thus risking upsetting a customer because they think they’re being ignored?

    Hi,

    I apologize for the oversight. I just wanted to let you know that a previous request had been answered in case you hadn’t seen the reply. Please see my answers to your latest response inline below:

    I do appreciate being notified when there is a permanent fix

    Of course! I will let you know as soon as this is fixed.

    Also, is there a direct email for support?

    You can always email help@wordpress.com if you would like email support. We will answer your question as soon as possible!

    You’re certainly right. I apologize again. The background image issue is currently being addressed and will be fixed as soon as possible.

    Regarding the header image disappearing, I was able to install a header image using this theme on a test blog. The header image seems to stay put even when I change the color scheme. Is this still acting up on your side?

    As for the stock background image, can you explain a bit of what the image looked like? The suggested background images change depending on the color scheme you’re using and cycle through a large amount of images. I’m happy to help you find the one you’re looking for though!

    Thank you for the additional response.

    Re: the header image issue – somehow, I got it to “stick” and thus far it’s staying. I don’t plan on playing around with it anytime soon, but if the issue resurfaces, I’ll let you guys know.

    As to not being able to locate a specific stock WP background image again, it’s no big deal. I found another one that looks good too, so really no biggie.

    My main concern is being able to have a background image AND also personalize the theme’s color palette rather than having it be an either/or thing. When I’m up to sitting down & tackling this issue again, I will most certainly try the fix you suggested via CSS modification. It’s been an exhausting startup process getting this blog up & running and it may take me a couple of days to recover.

    I know tech support is a really tough job. It was just quite frustrating having to spend hours and hours trying to troubleshoot an issue by myself as someone who is not only a new WP customer, but someone who is entirely new to blogging in general. I greatly appreciate the direct email you have provided for support if the need should arise in the future – thanks for your time.

    Hi,

    Please see my answers below!

    Sounds great! Yes, please let me know if it resurfaces.

    My main concern is being able to have a background image AND also personalize the theme’s color palette rather than having it be an either/or thing.

    I’ve talked to our theme developers and unfortunately, the background image isn’t something we’re going to fix. However, this is capable of being accomplished through the Custom CSS I provided pasted here for reference:

    body.custom-background {
    	background-image: url('Source URL here');
    	background-repeat: repeat;
    	background-position: top left;
    	background-attachment: scroll;
    }

    There are quite a few modifiers within that code that will help to move the image where you would like. I’m happy to modify the code for you to achieve the look you’re looking for!

    I completely understand. I realize the background issue can be quite frustrating. If you let me know the image you want to use, I’m happy to help you position it!

    Thanks for the offer! I actually like the current background I have set, which is a WP stock background image. So, going forward, what order would you advise I make these changes in? Change the theme’s palette to reflect my personalized colors and THEN tackle the background issue via the CSS modifications, or vice versa?

    I only ask because – since this is a WP stock background image and not something I’ve uploaded myself- I don’t want to wind up with the background image not being able to be found from the selection of WP stock backgrounds available in the customization screen. It seems the selections rotate, so if I tackle this again the stock WP background images might be randomized to not include the one I’m currently using.

    As for my theme’s color palette, my MAIN concern was setting my blog’s title and menu color – the value I had set previously was #990000, which is like a burgundy-ish color. Right now the theme’s default for both is just a plain old #000000 black – I want a color w/ a little more punch.

    Hi!

    We can find the src URL for the WP stock background image so that we won’t lose it going forward. For the current background you have, the stock image src is as follows:

    I created a short video demonstrating how to find the src URL for your background image in Chrome:

    If you’re happy with the current background image, don’t worry about finding another. That video can just be chalked up to just an FYI.

    So, steps forward:

    1. Let’s settle on a background image.
    2. Once you’re set on the image, make any color adjustments necessary. I can help if any colors aren’t working correctly.
    3. I can then help you place your background image correctly.

    Does that make sense? Let me know if you have any questions moving forward!

  • Unknown's avatar

    OK, great – thanks a lot! I’ve had an opportunity to set a color palette for my theme, so that’s all set.

    Now all we have to do is set the background, I guess. I would welcome your help with that – I tried playing with the CSS myself but think I must have entered something incorrectly.

    Once we get that set, in the future if I want to change my background image, all I will have to do is change the url in the CSS, yes?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

    I’ve set the background image. Please check it out and let me know if it’s looking how you would like it to.

    Regarding changing the background image moving forward, yes, you should just need to change the source URL. However, you’ll notice some other attributes (position, attachment, etc) in the CSS code. For background patterns like the one you’re currently using (a small square repeated), these settings work fine. If you want to use a larger image in the future, you may need to adjust those attributes. However, just get in contact with us, and we’ll be happy to guide you through the process if you get stuck!
