Back up / Export incomplete
-
Hi,
I have a blog here:
https://thanetrc.wordpress.com/
I want to back up all my blog posts; both the contents and all the images that have been posted.
I have gone into my MySite and then click settings then export and export all …
Then I get an email with a link to a zip file and I download this … but the zip file just has 2 xml files …
How can I download a full back up?The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi –
Together, those xml files should contain all of your site content. If the export is over a certain size it is automatically split up in to separate files.
To test your exported files, try importing it to a test site. Here’s how:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/If the export was incomplete, my suggestion is to start over and run a new export.

But I’m after a zip file with all the text and all the photos so I have a local copy of it as a back up …
I don’t just want a means to move from my current install to a new one …

There is no way to backup your image files in your WordPress.com media library in this way. Your site’s data is stored on multiple servers around the world and we keep a full backup of your site in the event it gets hacked, or in the event every one of our servers are destroyed at the same time, so your content is safe. But the only export option we have is the .xml file which contains your text, and links to the images in your media library.
The only way to get a full backup is to export your WordPress.com site and import it to a self-hosted installation. Then you can use a plugin to download the entire media library or ask your hosting provider for a database dump of your site’s files. Neither of these are possible on WordPress.com.

I can assure you it is. We have backups for our backups :)
Best thing you can do to keep your content safe is to make sure you don’t get hacked. While we can restore things in that situation, it’s better to prevent it from happening in the first place. The way you do that is to make sure you have long, unique passwords for all your accounts, but especially your WordPress.com and email accounts, and also consider activating two-factor authentication on both of them.
You don’t have any other admins on your site, so as long as it’s impossible for someone to access your account, there’s no way for anyone from outside to get to your content.
