back up of website files and database

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I need a backup of my website files and database from wordpress.com to manually upload to my new wordpress.org site. I’m not able to export the files in the advised way on wordpress.org as they are too large. How can I get a copy of these files and the database?
    Thanks!

    Hi there,

To understand your issue better, Please share the steps you followed to export your WordPress.com.

Please refer this article to get more info: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/#backups

I’m also adding the ‘modlook’ tag in the sidebar to get some staff attention here and confirm things better.

    Thanks!

On wordpress.com, I went to tools, then to export, and exported all posts, comments, and tags. The file folder downloaded to my computer.

Then I went to my new wordpress.org, again to tools, then import, and tried to import the .xml file (there were 2 files in the folder, so I tried them both). I was unable to import more than my first 4 posts so I contacted support. They were able to upload about 28 more, but then they contacted me and told me they were not able to import all the posts because the .xml file was too big.

They then told me I should contact you to get “the back up files and database” so I could manually upload the posts to my new website.

I’m very new to this process, so I’m not sure I completely understand myself.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi hungryfortomorrow,

They then told me I should contact you to get “the back up files and database” so I could manually upload the posts to my new website.

You can create an export file of your site’s content but database backups aren’t included — they are only available with self hosted sites, not those hosted on WordPress.com.

If the .xml file is too large, I recommend exporting subsets of your content. Posts, pages, media and categories etc can be exported separately rather than in one .xml file:

    Export Your Website’s Content

Those smaller .xml files can then be imported into your WordPress.org site.

    I hope this helps.

Ok! Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

You’re very welcome! Hopefully several smaller .xml files will do the trick :)

Yes it did work! Thankfully there weren’t too many posts more, so it only took a couple of separate imports.
My hosting company has also reached out to me to help solve this issue of large imports and hopefully they can solve this issue themselves.
Thanks again for your time and help!

That’s great news, thanks for letting me know. I’ll keep my fingers crossed your hosting company can fix the issue with larger imports on their end.
