Backdating a blog post

I’d like to know if on WordPress one can easily back date a blog post to let’s say the year 1965, or even 1066 if one wanted?
I recently started building a blog with another website builder. I want the blog to be more of a historical day to day rather than current day to day. I found out this isn’t possible. I tried checking out other website builders but the furthest back one would go was 1970 and the process is rather laboriously scrolling backwards through the days. Yawn! Preferably one can just type in the exact date. If this is possible I’ll switch to WordPress.

  • Hi there,

You can backdate a post to 1066, yes. I just tried it:

You can type the year in manually.

Just keep in mind that if you backdate posts like this, people following your site in the WordPress.com Reader will never see them, as the Reader displays most recent posts based on their timestamp, so only people who subscribe to email updates for new posts on your site will be notified if you publish posts like this.

Automated sharing to social media via our Publicize feature will still work fine, though.

Thank you Kokkeh. You answered my question, but now I have a million more!

Seeing as I’ve not actually created a blog, let alone regularly added posts I’ve got a steep learning curve.

If I create all these backdated blog posts before publishing the blog, what will people see who visit the blog?
After publishing it I intend to carry on posting, and understand that what will then happen is what you described. However presumably people can find a backdated blog by year or by tags?

  • Yes, folks who visit the blog in their web browsers can find them. You could even group them together and displayed groups if you want.

Great. Thanks. I think I just need to get going and figure it out as I go along.
    Thanks again.
