Which page are you looking to change the background on? Can you link me to the pages you want to change?

Also, while I have you here…what I am trying to do is set up a blog/shop using wordpress. Is Pique the best free template for this do you know?

I can’t view that link because it is from your customizer. You are trying to change the image on your homepage correct?
Here’s how you change the image, “To set the background image of your panel, assign a Featured Image to the page. You can also adjust the background color and the opacity of your featured image on top of it, allowing you fine-grained control over your page’s appearance.
The footer widget uses your Custom Header Image as its background.”
That is straight off of your theme page: https://wordpress.com/themes/pique/ You can go there to help with setting up your theme.You aren’t able to do any ecommerce on WordPress.com. The only option is to put a PayPal Button on your site.

You should be able to change the background colour in the Customizer’s Backgrounds & Colors panel:
Keep in mind that you’ll only see this background area on larger screens that are wide enough to show it.
Also, while I have you here…what I am trying to do is set up a blog/shop using wordpress. Is Pique the best free template for this do you know?
If you like Pique, then it’s certainly a fine theme to set up a store.
