    Hi,

On a free theme, with the Twenty Seventeen theme applied, you may either use the default palette or select from one of the other six optional palettes available at Customize > Colors & Background > Choose a Palette. There is no inherent option to use an image as the background behind a post or page with the theme. This would require CSS Customization, which is available on the Premium and Business Plans.

If you’re interested in such CSS customization, then you may submit a support request to the CSS Customization forum. Alternatively, you may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

I’m not sure that it would be possible, even with CSS customization, to display an image behind a single post selectively, or behind each post, with the Twenty Seventeen theme.

    Amendment:

A background image may be selected from either your media library or external files at Customize > Colors & Backgrounds > Backgrounds > Select Image. However, in tests I found that the background image only displays as a border at the bottom of static pages and archives pages, and only then where the content of such a page is rather limited, unless the zoom setting is impractically small (several clicks out on FF, often resulting in unreadable text).
