Background and alignment questions

I have two questions. The first one is about the background color. I want to change it from white to black but I cannot see how to do this from the customize area. I was able to change all of the other colors to black with the exception of the current space that you see where the text and graphics would go. Right now I have two small banners and some buttons for social media at the about page. I’d like this to be against a black background instead of the white that you see.

My next question is about alignment. How do I get this content to go all the way to the left so that it is directly to the right of the side bar instead of having all of that open blank space that is currently white? Perhaps the whole problem could be solved if I can just make the background black and make my font color white. That might correct the spacial problem my eye is having with the design. Is there a way to do this without having to buy the premium package?

    Hi there,

The first one is about the background color. I want to change it from white to black but I cannot see how to do this from the customize area.

Please note that you will need to purchase the Custom Design upgrade to do this. It will allow you to apply custom colors, fonts, and edit CSS.

Perhaps the whole problem could be solved if I can just make the background black and make my font color white.

Please note that it was designed this way. As seen in the Twenty Fourteen support guide, the main column width is 474. If you purchase the custom design upgrade you can make the background black, but the width would remain the same.
